Ford Duratec Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A judge has certified a class action lawsuit that alleges certain Ford vehicles contain a water pump defect that can cause catastrophic engine failure.
  • Why: The water pump defect allegedly causes coolant to leak into other parts of the engine, damaging other components and potentially causing engine failure.
  • Where: The Ford class action lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has granted class action status to a lawsuit alleging certain Ford vehicles have defective water pumps that can cause engine failure.

Engine failure allegedly occurs when the water pumps leak coolant into other parts of the engine, damaging other components.

Most of the affected Ford vehicles reportedly have the Duratec V6 engine.

The Ford class action lawsuit alleges the following vehicles contain defective water pumps:

  • 2007-2018 Ford Edge

Class members of the Ford class action lawsuit include anyone in Canada who owned or leased one of the affected vehicles on or before June 8, 2021, and had a water pump that failed, causing the vehicle to sustain damage. Ford owners and lessees whose vehicles sustained damage and caused them to suffer personal injury are also included in the lawsuit.

Ford Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Background

Plaintiffs Kimberley Carter, Keith Halliday and Deonarine Phagoo filed the Ford water pump class action lawsuit, alleging the water pumps in the affected Ford vehicles are defective and leak coolant into other engine parts and damage engine components.

The Ford water pump defect can cause catastrophic engine failures, the Ford class action lawsuit alleges.

The court dismissed some claims from the proposed Ford class action lawsuit before granting certification, including claims of negligent manufacturing and failure to warn. The judge also removed Ford Credit Canada Limited as a defendant.

The Ford class action lawsuit will include a negligence in design claim for vehicles equipped with a Ford Duratec V6 water pump that caused engine damage or injured the vehicle owner.

A similar Ford Duratec class action lawsuit was filed in the United States, but a judge dismissed that case after finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately show Ford knowingly sold vehicles with defective parts.

I have purchased this 2016 explorer in 2018, since then I have spent over 15K in repairs, (I have the bills to prove it) hoping that this would end one day, I enjoyed the drive, not so much anymore. Today, November 15, 2023 I walk in the garage to get winter tires installed, they inform me that the water pump is leaking, ok, thinking water pump, ok… let’s see… how much… could be close to 5k repair..!! %?&%$#!? what..!!! sorry ford…. customer satisfaction must be your priority, imagine if it was….I have had it… never again.. and surely will not recommend a Ford.

Having my 2016 Explorer sport with 106000 miles water pump replaced this week. Mechanic Cost $3900. I still can’t believe the pump is in the engine.

Lithia of Boise we purchased a 2011 Ford Explorer from them in 2012 off the lot. Paid for the extended warranties and life time oil changes for the vehicle at a 121000 miles 12 27 2019 the car overheated without warning. We took it to the dealership and was informed that the water pump went out with this particular Duratec engine when the water pump goes out Coolant goes in to the oil in the engine the timing belt shatters causing engine shards to enter the inside of the engine currently my car is not fixed it would be $8500 to replace the engine. All because a water pump went out. We still have not had the funds to repair this vehicle. 11/06/2023

I purchased my 2017 Ford Explorer XLT approximately 1 year ago absolutely loved the car until last week I found out the hard way the water pump needed to be replaced and was very hard to get to $3500 later !!! I also will never support Ford ever again unless they reimburse me for their engineering disaster of a water pump

My 2015 Explorer Sport just had my water pump fail. Located in a really hard to reach spot and now coolant all over my engine. Praying this didnt make anything worse. And that it will still run after hopefully getting repaired. WHY is Ford not recalling this issue!!!!! Last Ford I will ever buy!!!!

  7. Jordan Hodges says:

Our 2011 Ford Explorer just had the water pump go with no warning. Vehicle stopped working and coasted to a stop on the side of the road. Took it to FORD and the want $10,000 do replace the engine, as the coolant leaked into the engine, mixing with the engine oil. I found a mechanic shop that flushed the engine and replaced water pump and timing chain at a cost of $4,000, but they were unwilling to warranty the work, and said vehicle could now stop working again at any time with a catastrophic engine failure due to the negative impact of the coolant having mixed with the oil in the engine.

I’d like more information about the suit and if I can get my repairs paid for, or better yet, a new engine!

  8. Jan Tootle says:

Just had to replace the water pump on my 2016 Explorer which I bought new in 2016. Ford wanted $3,000 to replace the pump. I was lucky to find someone local who had the skill and equipment to replace it for somewhat less than Ford. The pump is installed behind the engine so that you must remove the top of the engine to replace the pump. It cost me $ 1,700 + to get the pump replaced. This is the last Ford product I will ever purchase!

  9. Maria Brooks says:

I have a 2018 Explorer, the water pump is gone…leaking fluid somewhere under the hood. Repair bill is $4000 and it’s 18 days out of the power train warranty. I cannot even get a service tech to call me back.

  10. Samiki T Booker says:

I have a 2008 ford edge and my water pump has a leak and it’s going everywhere under my hood
