The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has granted class action status to a lawsuit alleging certain Ford vehicles have defective water pumps that can cause engine failure.

Engine failure allegedly occurs when the water pumps leak coolant into other parts of the engine, damaging other components.

Most of the affected Ford vehicles reportedly have the Duratec V6 engine.

The Ford class action lawsuit alleges the following vehicles contain defective water pumps:

Class members of the Ford class action lawsuit include anyone in Canada who owned or leased one of the affected vehicles on or before June 8, 2021, and had a water pump that failed, causing the vehicle to sustain damage. Ford owners and lessees whose vehicles sustained damage and caused them to suffer personal injury are also included in the lawsuit.

Ford Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Background

Plaintiffs Kimberley Carter, Keith Halliday and Deonarine Phagoo filed the Ford water pump class action lawsuit, alleging the water pumps in the affected Ford vehicles are defective and leak coolant into other engine parts and damage engine components.

The Ford water pump defect can cause catastrophic engine failures, the Ford class action lawsuit alleges.

The court dismissed some claims from the proposed Ford class action lawsuit before granting certification, including claims of negligent manufacturing and failure to warn. The judge also removed Ford Credit Canada Limited as a defendant.

The Ford class action lawsuit will include a negligence in design claim for vehicles equipped with a Ford Duratec V6 water pump that caused engine damage or injured the vehicle owner.

A similar Ford Duratec class action lawsuit was filed in the United States, but a judge dismissed that case after finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately show Ford knowingly sold vehicles with defective parts.

2011 Lincoln MKX. Replaced the engine when the water pump burst and leaked fluid into the engine in 2020. Today, after installing a replacement engine then, it has happened again. I have the repair records from 2020. I would like to join this lawsuit if possible.

  6. Thomas says:

Bought a used FLEX, seemed like a good vehicle, then 2 months later the pump went, destroyed the engine, and no auto wreckers around here would sell an engine because no guarantee if any good or not. 2 months… and the car was scrapped.

  7. Rosa Alexander says:

I own a 2014 Lincoln MKX, has 145K on it. On July 14, 2023 while driving home, a message popped up saying “Overheating Coolant Temperature” (something like that), then the car started shaking, luckily I was able to quickly pull in to a Ford Dealership to get it looked at. After a diagnostic test, it was confirmed that the water pump is leaking and needs replacing, along with other parts. Needless to say, my total for this repair is going to be $6K. Would I be able to join this lawsuit? Thank you.
