The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has granted class action status to a lawsuit alleging certain Ford vehicles have defective water pumps that can cause engine failure.

Engine failure allegedly occurs when the water pumps leak coolant into other parts of the engine, damaging other components.

Most of the affected Ford vehicles reportedly have the Duratec V6 engine.

Class members of the Ford class action lawsuit include anyone in Canada who owned or leased one of the affected vehicles on or before June 8, 2021, and had a water pump that failed, causing the vehicle to sustain damage. Ford owners and lessees whose vehicles sustained damage and caused them to suffer personal injury are also included in the lawsuit.

Ford Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Background

Plaintiffs Kimberley Carter, Keith Halliday and Deonarine Phagoo filed the Ford water pump class action lawsuit, alleging the water pumps in the affected Ford vehicles are defective and leak coolant into other engine parts and damage engine components.

The Ford water pump defect can cause catastrophic engine failures, the Ford class action lawsuit alleges.

The court dismissed some claims from the proposed Ford class action lawsuit before granting certification, including claims of negligent manufacturing and failure to warn. The judge also removed Ford Credit Canada Limited as a defendant.

The Ford class action lawsuit will include a negligence in design claim for vehicles equipped with a Ford Duratec V6 water pump that caused engine damage or injured the vehicle owner.

A similar Ford Duratec class action lawsuit was filed in the United States, but a judge dismissed that case after finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately show Ford knowingly sold vehicles with defective parts.

I was driving home I lost power steering next my light came on charge battery , then i was close to home pulled into my driveway and coolant was all over the ground . At that point I assumed it may be a waterpump but I could not find it . I called a couple mechanics right away both asked me a few questions to verify their thoughts . Both stated the water pump is internal and most likely failed after I said what I was driving. I was told it,s an extensive job and the labour is what cost so much around $2300 just the pump and more if the timing chain needs to be done aswell. The mechanic said if the engine is gone then around $5000. V.I.N. #1FHK8DXCGA02602

2013 edge 3.7 noticed antifreeze leak took to shop $2600.00 water pump timing chain if I only knew

  3. Jeremy Hays says:

I have a 2008 Ford Taurus and have experienced complete engine failure due to this bad design of engine. My water pump failed too and leaked into my motor and washed out my bearings. Had a aftermarket warranty but they denied my claim when it happened and now want to charge me over $8000 for and replacement motor with over 90,000 miles on it. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO TREAT ME THIS WAY AND OTHERS AS WELL.

  4. Tyiest Mayo says:

My 2019 Ford Taurus over heated took to the shop it was a water pump issue. The total cost $3000. They also had to replace the timing belt.

  6. Kyonna Jones says:

I have a 2012 Ford Explorer and my water pump is located inside the engine and have being suggested to change the timing as well. What a very high cost when it didn’t have to be this hard.

  7. Grace Brown says:

I am from Virginia my 2011 ford edge blew up with no warnings. Faulty water pump probably but it had been in the shop the week before they never checked out the water pump. Now I’m paying for a new engine,

  8. Connie Thomas says:

I live in the OKC ,Okla area. my Ford Explorer had the water pump replaced. how do I file for a class action suit?

  9. Juan Carvajal says:

My 2014 ford explorer now has this problem I need to fix and the mechanic is asking me $4000, I need to fight this, otherwise this thing will be metal scrap.

  10. RALPH SCHMITZ says:

I own a 2014 ford flex, love the car but years back i heard about the engine failures happening on the express way and having total engine failure. So I own this car that I am afraid to drive any long distance. I called around to local auto repair and they say is a 3500 dollar repair and maybe should wait until if starts to leak. This is not what I expect from my car. Ford should step up and replace those water pumps, however the mechanic said to never replace the water pump without changing the timing chain. So to Ford engineering, anybody that approved that design should be fired, fundamentally it is very bad design. I am sure they knew the potential problem because they use an engineering tool called DFMEA.
