  • Who: A judge has certified a class action lawsuit that alleges certain Ford vehicles contain a water pump defect that can cause catastrophic engine failure.

  • Where: The Ford class action lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has granted class action status to a lawsuit alleging certain Ford vehicles have defective water pumps that can cause engine failure.

Engine failure allegedly occurs when the water pumps leak coolant into other parts of the engine, damaging other components.

Most of the affected Ford vehicles reportedly have the Duratec V6 engine.

Class members of the Ford class action lawsuit include anyone in Canada who owned or leased one of the affected vehicles on or before June 8, 2021, and had a water pump that failed, causing the vehicle to sustain damage. Ford owners and lessees whose vehicles sustained damage and caused them to suffer personal injury are also included in the lawsuit.

Ford Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Background

Plaintiffs Kimberley Carter, Keith Halliday and Deonarine Phagoo filed the Ford water pump class action lawsuit, alleging the water pumps in the affected Ford vehicles are defective and leak coolant into other engine parts and damage engine components.

The Ford water pump defect can cause catastrophic engine failures, the Ford class action lawsuit alleges.

The court dismissed some claims from the proposed Ford class action lawsuit before granting certification, including claims of negligent manufacturing and failure to warn. The judge also removed Ford Credit Canada Limited as a defendant.

The Ford class action lawsuit will include a negligence in design claim for vehicles equipped with a Ford Duratec V6 water pump that caused engine damage or injured the vehicle owner.

A similar Ford Duratec class action lawsuit was filed in the United States, but a judge dismissed that case after finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately show Ford knowingly sold vehicles with defective parts.

My 2014 Taurus began leaking coolant was told the water pump needed to be replaced. After spending 2000 on the water pump engine failed had to pay 8000 for engine replacement while still making monthly payments. Will never buy Ford again. I want in on this class action.

  2. Tawana Reese says:

Correction made from earlier post. My vehicle first began leaking coolant in mid year of 2020. I had the water pump repaired in late 2020. It was a little over a year before the problem started again. Even though I love my car, this is enough to stay goodbye to Ford.

  3. Tawana Reese says:

In mid-year 2019, my 2016 Ford Explorer was leaking coolant. The leak was so bad that the coolant would completely leak out within minutes. When I took my vehicle to the mechanic, they said it was water pump and I had to pay about $1500 for repair. By the end of 2021, the leak started up again. I had a mechanic check the leak and they confirmed it was once again the water pump. I made a complaint to the NHTSA about the reoccurring issue, but never received a response. Now with prices of everything going up, I know the repair would cost more. Now I have to wait until I get enough money for the repair and a replacement vehicle (since it’s a 10-12 hour repair) before I can get the necessary repairs done. I definitely plan on signing up for this class action lawsuit. Never will I ever get another Ford vehicle.

  5. Stephanie Houston says:

2018 Ford explorer water pump just went out, hopefully no water damage. $3700+ to replace water pump. 86000 miles

    1. Carlos Alvarez says:

Did ford help you out with the payment I’m having the same issue 60,000 miles

  6. Carolyn Brodowski says:

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer and noticed coolant in my driveway & smelled it as well. I told my hubby, he went out & assessed the situation, he couldn’t find the leak. He added coolant, I drove it again the next day. BAM! same issue. still leaking, he called his dad (who’s a mechanic) to come look at it. He concluded it was indeed the water pump, we have owned the vehicle 3 years and my hubby is very diligent about the maintenance. We took it to a reputable shop close to us and were quoted $3100.00 for the repair. So now were out a vehicle until we can afford the repair…all the while STILL paying $420 a month for the car payment. As soon as it’s repaired we are trading it in. I think this is deplorable that Ford knows this obviously is a catastrophic and costly repair & are unwilling to classify the issue as a recall. Ford should be held liable & required to fix the damage for Ford vehicles at NO cost to the owners. I will NEVER purchase another Ford vehicle. I am a 100% backer of buying American automobiles but I’m going to purchase Chevy products from this point on.

  7. Brian DesRoches says:

  9. Gina Hofmeister says:

I am currently having my failing water pump replaced on my 2015 Ford Edge to the tune of 4000.00!! Wish I had known of these issues sooner- will never purchase a Ford again

  10. Joan Gilbert says:

We had a water pump failure in a 2013 Ford Taurus this past fall. The repair was over 3200.00 as the engine had to be pulled. Lucky my wife saw the coolant on the driveway before any damage was done.
