Ford Duratec Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A judge has certified a class action lawsuit that alleges certain Ford vehicles contain a water pump defect that can cause catastrophic engine failure.
  • Why: The water pump defect allegedly causes coolant to leak into other parts of the engine, damaging other components and potentially causing engine failure.
  • Where: The Ford class action lawsuit was filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has granted class action status to a lawsuit alleging certain Ford vehicles have defective water pumps that can cause engine failure.

Engine failure allegedly occurs when the water pumps leak coolant into other parts of the engine, damaging other components.

Most of the affected Ford vehicles reportedly have the Duratec V6 engine.

The Ford class action lawsuit alleges the following vehicles contain defective water pumps:

  • 2007-2018 Ford Edge
  • 2011-2019 Ford Explorer
  • 2009-2019 Ford Flex
  • 2010-2012 Ford Fusion

Class members of the Ford class action lawsuit include anyone in Canada who owned or leased one of the affected vehicles on or before June 8, 2021, and had a water pump that failed, causing the vehicle to sustain damage. Ford owners and lessees whose vehicles sustained damage and caused them to suffer personal injury are also included in the lawsuit.

Ford Water Pump Defect Class Action Lawsuit Background

Plaintiffs Kimberley Carter, Keith Halliday and Deonarine Phagoo filed the Ford water pump class action lawsuit, alleging the water pumps in the affected Ford vehicles are defective and leak coolant into other engine parts and damage engine components.

The Ford water pump defect can cause catastrophic engine failures, the Ford class action lawsuit alleges.

The court dismissed some claims from the proposed Ford class action lawsuit before granting certification, including claims of negligent manufacturing and failure to warn. The judge also removed Ford Credit Canada Limited as a defendant.

The Ford class action lawsuit will include a negligence in design claim for vehicles equipped with a Ford Duratec V6 water pump that caused engine damage or injured the vehicle owner.

A similar Ford Duratec class action lawsuit was filed in the United States, but a judge dismissed that case after finding the plaintiffs failed to adequately show Ford knowingly sold vehicles with defective parts.

I have a 2014 Ford Flex and the car was diagnosed with a water pump issue a few months back for which we had the repair done and incurred the cost of doing so.
My mother has a 2016 Ford Fusion and is currently going through the exact same problem after antifreeze spilled out under the hood. Water pump is currently being replaced and she’s been quoted $2000+ for the work.

  8. Denise S says:

Own a 2011 Ford Edge Sport with 125K miles & have not any major issues with the vehicle until this weekend (03june23). Check engine light came on, took it to the dealership who informed me there is a leaking internal water pump. In order to repair it they need to take apart the motor and based on the year & mileage of my vehicle if they only replace the water pump they can’t guarantee nothing else won’t go wrong with the motor. As a result, they recommend replacing the entire motor which will cost $11K!! This price is more than what the car is worth BUT this is/was a very reliable & well taken care of vehicle that all of a sudden stopped performing like it should. If I meet the requirements of the class action lawsuit I am interested in being a part of it.

  9. Robin Alexander says:

I live in the US and I purchased a 2017 ford edge in 2018. The water pump suddenly went 2 weeks ago, there’s only 46,600 mi not an extreme amount for almost 7 year old car. I was told my warrantee had run out for that part and it would be $699 plus tax to fix. I explained it may be defective from what I’ve read and they refused to fix it and said it was due to wear and tear.
    This is the text I received prior to refusal to fix ;

Good morning verified concern water pump leaking $699, also rear brake pads low needs replacement with rotor $689.95(LIFETIME WARRANTY ON BRAKE PADS) battery weak recommend replacement $369.95(5yrs warranty) wipers blades $69.95, brake fluid service needed $219.95,NYSI $37.00 entire repairs $2330.00with tax Monday completion Let us know to proceed.

    Text STOP to opt-out.
