A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.

Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.

Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.

The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

My 2018 f150 5 LTr consumes oil at a random rate. Had to add 2 ltrs shortly after purchase then everything was ok for a few months. The had to add another ltr before having oil changed. Frustrating as hell. Have to check the oil daily to ensure no damage to components.

  5. Shawn Bulifant says:

Purchased 2020 F150 in May 2020, noticed always seems to be low on oil. Regular oil changes around 5,000 miles Mentioned to service rep at dealer told me common to be a quart low. Have added oil in between changes. New vehicles should not be burning oil.

  6. Kevin says:

First time I found out about the oil consumption issue I was changing the oil on my 2018 F150 at a Mr. Lube they advised the oil was barely touching the dipstick. I googled the issue and found that there is a law suit. I contacted my dealer and they said they knew about it, I took my truck in almost $300.00 later they said they changed the dipstick and changed the oil, reset codes. Now about 3000 km into the fix I’m down a half litre of oil. Dealership advised if this did not fix the problem the engine would have to be replaced. Not happy.

  7. Mike Pena says:

2018 f150 5.0 28000 miles have the same problem but need to fix the problem

  8. Candace Hickie says:

I have noticed this issue along with the issue of losing antifreeze within the last few months in my 2018 5.0L F150. I love my truck but I am super disappointed to find the issues with the engine. I would love more info on the law suit as well.

i bought my 2018 f 150 with a coyote 5.0. it ran out of oil and i had to put 6.5 litres in to bring it back up. as for knocking, always on acceleration. the vct system was rebuilt under warranty but it still knocks and sounds rattly when idlying. i bought the 5.0 because it has a good past. my 2015 mustang gt 5.0 runs awesome with no issues. it seems 2018 thongs have gone bad. it hurts the resale of the truck which is another factor hindering the truck. they arent a cheap purchase. ford needs to step up and fix the issue dven if it means replacing the motor. i only have 53,000 km on mine. it should run perfectly. change the oil every 8,000 km with castrol syntec.

I own a 2018 fx4 5.0 l. Burning about 4-6 quarts of oil between oil changes. Engine ticks so bad it sounds like a Diesel engine. Had it to dealership several times. Didn’t fix problem. Now they won’t even answer my phone calls. Humber motors ford is where I purchased it at.

  10. Randy Gilley says:

Bought a 2020 xlt 5.0 new (16 miles on odometer) in 2021. It took about one year and now it’s leaking 4 to 5 quarts every two weeks!! Called dealership and taking it in next week. I have the extended warranty also. So we’ll see

    1. Cheri Kelch says:
