A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.

Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.

Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.

The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

  1. Tracy Dyckhoff says:

I bought my 2019 F-150 XLT crew 4×4 with the 5.0 liter V-8, in March 2020. The truck was purchased originally, from Canada, slightly used from a rental company, with slightly more than 13,000 miles, by a used car dealer, from California. It was first, re-titled in Arkansas, and then to California, in his name. Then, I purchased it. After 18 months of it in my possession, I have encountered at first, excessive oil consumption, yet no oil leaks! Then just recently, I had the check engine light come on, and the truck is constantly stalling anytime I need to stop, whether it is in highway traffic or stop lights, etc. I am Also experiencing rough idling, engine lagging and sputtering, knocking, whining transmission as well! I use my vehicle strictly for work and need reliability above and beyond all things!

    I have a 2019 Lariat, I ordered…so bought it new.
I use full synthetic oil. On my last oil change at 15000 miles on the odometer, I change it every 5000 miles. I noticed I only drained at best 5 quarts from it. So my truck is consuming close to 4 quarts in only 5000 miles.
I took it in to get the TSB done. I’m only at 16500 miles right now, so I’m not sure if it helped or not yet.
Its unfortunate that Ford won’t repair their best selling vehicle!

I special ordered my 2019 F150 XLT 5.0L Coyote V8 in April 2019, took delivery in June. I have noticed oil consumption at around the first 2,500km. I added 1 liter and then another around 4,000km. I didn’t know of the oil consumption issue at that time. A few months went by and I took it to the dealer and told them of the TSB. They topped up the oil on their nickel, about 2 liters. This service advisor said he would enter the info into record. He never did. About 4 moths after that, my regular service advisor returned from a lengthy illness and booked me in for the Ford TSB of December 2019.(Replace dipstick, oil and filter and re-program the PCM) Consumption improved slightly for a while. In March I went to the dealer after noticing oil level near the bottom 2 or 3 cross hatch. They added about 2 1/2 liters and recorded it on the consumption sheet. Checked oil about 2 weeks ago, it was a bit low, about 2-3 cross hatch from the top. Its apparent the engine consumes oil, mine may not be as bad as some but, it should not consume this amount. Sure looks like Ford doesn’t want to come clean on this, it’s going to cost them big bucks to fix it.

My 2018 5.0 ltr losses 2 litres of oil between oil changes and has been doing that since day one.Has the oil consumption test and the dealership says it is normal. My old 5.4 ltr never burned a drop of oil and had over 200 thousands kilometers. What a joke.

  5. Peter Dietrich says:

I have a 2021 F150 5.0L purchased from Listowell Ford. Low oil light came on at 1300km and again at 4000km. In both instances the dipstick was also below the add mark and I added 1 litre. Blue smoke was visible form exhaust when starting engine.
Dealer put me on an “oil consumption test” merry-go-round, requiring a weekday oil check every 320km (5 day service). I live 330km from dealer round trip which makes the vehicle usless for anything else. On the 3rd oil level check they accessed the oil filler cap suggesting they were topping up the oil level by small amounts on at least one visit.
I had to take a 1000km weekend trip (missing dealer inspection) and dipstick is now at half-mark, indicating oil consumption continues at about 1 liter per 2000km if I don’t visit dealer for oil consumption test (top-up?).

  6. Jason says:

Same with my 2019 f150 5.0. Loses almost half of its oil capacity between oil changes. Only noticed it when I started doing my own oil change. Before this the truck was always serviced at the dealership and they never told me that the truck had any oil consumption problems

  7. Matin Sheikh says:

I also have been having oil consumption issues, on my 2019 f150 King Ranch. I have found at first it was 1 litre every 6 months but now I am adding a litre every 4- 5 weeks.

  8. jeff graham says:

i bought a new f150 2018 5 litre it took 3 to 5 liters between oil changes, complained for 8 months ,they dropped a new engine in , same thing , told me i was the only one

  9. Mike hayes says:

I also have been having oil consumption issues, on my 2019 f150 King Ranch. I have been keeping records and have found at first it was 1 litre every 6 months but now I am adding a litre every 4-7 weeks. I hear knocking and know when it is time to add oil. I have brought my truck in just this week for the technical service Bulletin 19-2365. They changed the oil and oil dip stick (now shorter by 1.5 cms) and asked me to keep a record , (Which I have been) of oil levels. They changed the oil adding 9 litres. The service manager was quite laid back and I felt he just didn’t want me to get upset so he just listened. He said an engine wash might be next step.

    1. NATHAN R DeBockler says:

I have a 2019 5.0 xlt 4×4 it’s eating alot of oil between oil changes.i have been searching on line for others with the same issue.

  10. Jonathan Labelle says:

Hi, I have just purchased a 2018 F150, V8 (Coyote engine). After a few reads about the excessive oil consumption, I went and check the oil in my truck only to my surprise that the oil was under the safe limit. I tow a 5000lbs trailer every now and then, the truck is performing well but it keeps burning oil. I baby all my vehicles even more the F150 as it was a dream truck. I am taking the truck for its first oil change in 2 weeks, I will bring up the excessive oil consumption, I also notice a knocking sound since I purchased the truck, I was told it’s because of the direct port injection but I want it to be recorded. I live in Gatineau, Quebec, if I am still entitled to be part of the recourse, I would like to be included. I don’t want to get rid of the truck, I only want it to last me for many years!!

    Thanks, Jo
