A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.

Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.

Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.

The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

  1. Harry says:

2018 5.0 v8 Love the truck , hate the oil issue. Ford has replaced cylinder heads twice and I am still having issues with oil consumption. 6500 miles after cylinder head replacement and dipstick reading below minimum level.

    1. Nicole says:

Same here. 2018 f150 5.0 v8. So far they have reprogrammed it, changed both cylinder heads and still losing about quart every few hundred miles. Said they would put a new engine in but can’t find an engine these days apparently. I’d like ford to buy back and get a different year

  2. Greg Migneault says:

I also have a 2018 F-150 that “uses” oil. I usually have to add oil before it is due for an oil change (always changed at 8000km full synthetic). It also has the knocking sound at low rpm. It’s too bad because I li e the truck but never would have bought it knowing it would have these issues with the 5.0L engine.

  3. Gus Enriquez says:

Yes I also have a 2019 xlt with the 5.0 coyote. From new I have constantly checked oil levels and it does use it . I had a 2018 and was exactly the same . Good truck but I hate this oil issue . Such a shame. I do love this truck but it needs to be taken care of .

  4. Brian says:

Bought a 2018 Ford XLT 4×4 brand new in 2018. For the last several months, dipstick seems to read low. I take to same mechanic for oil changes every 5K miles and told him seemed to be low on oil and no oil spots in garage etc… I occasionally get the low oil pressure indicator on app. We have been keeping an eye on it. Now I know there is a real issue. I also hear some “knocking” when I accelerate from a stop position. Asked about it when I first bought it and they said normal. Would be interested in info, about the class action.

  5. Ruben e de Leon says:

    2018 F150 King Ranch
3,300 miles after oil change, it burned thru 3.25 quarts of oil

  6. Timothy Williams says:

Recent purchase of 2018 f150 5.0. Shortly after I noticed trans jumping around falling hard in gear. Timing chain rattling when letting off gas. I got the oil changed when I got it have checked my oil daily after it got to about 3000 miles my oil is below hatch marks. Cold mornings I have a bottom end knock piston slap I’d say have not found another video like mine. Pulling in traffic with auto start stop my steering is delayed and has damn near caused a wreck. When I start it occasionally the truck jumps like it’s in gear you can heat rear end knock and release. Passenger side dash bowed from I assume cheap plastic it’s made from. I get best 15 mpg dash reading is not correct this truck will not get 18 22 mpg as advertised. Iv been waiting 3 months to get a loaner car so I can leave it but they never have one and never return calls. I have 15000 miles left on power train from ford.

  7. Dan Peppers says:

I have a 2018 F-150 Lariat 5.0 and before the last two oil changes, I noticed there was no oil showing on the dipstick. no leaks under the truck, where its parked everyday is bone dry. my last oil change was 1100 miles ago at 56K, today I had to add 4 qts of oil to get a proper reading on the dip stick. that is really excessive! 4 qts in 1100 miles! its not smoking and dash indicator shows normal. I would join a class action suit for sure!

  8. Steve Bennett says:

I just bought a used 2018 and having the same problem. When talking to the service people the first thing 3 of them said was OH you have the 5.0 liter motor. they already knew of the problem with oi consumption. I just got charged $357.00 for 8 quarts of oil and a longer dipstick, 2 hours of work. NOT a HAPPY person now.

  9. Daniel McAuley says:

2018 F-150 5 liter V8 , low oil warning happened 3 times , oil not visible on dip stick , one time it happened right after an oil change , not a happy camper as you never know when it may be fatel

  10. Wayne Steele says:

We bought a new 2018 Ford F150 in Feb of 2018 with 91 miles on the odometer. I have always taken it to the dealership for oil change with 10% left on the oil change reminder and have had no issues until now. The truck has 31000 miles on it and the factory warranty just ran out in Feb 2021 (36 months) and it is due for an oil change. I was driving the truck with 11% left on the monitor and the low oil pressure warning came on, under acceleration, and the truck went into Limp mode momentarily. I drove 2 more miles to my destination after everything cleared up and parked the truck until it was under normal operating temp. I checked the oil level and there was no oil indicated on the dip stick, I added 1 quart of oil, made an appointment for an oil change. Two days later the CEL came on and it needs more oil, having it changed tomorrow and will monitor it. The nearest reliable dealership is 40 miles away and I will be contacting them this week. I would love to join this Class Action if possible I am in the US. Thank you
