A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.

Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.

Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.

The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

  3. Mark McGregor says:

2018 f150 5.0 burning excessive oil, was initially told by dealership that I would be on oil consumption test duty hen told me new TSB out to reprogram computer and new dip stick. Problem did not go away. Please contact me for law suit in Canada

  4. Karley Morris says:

I bought a 2018 Ford f150 xlt and have had the same issues low oil between oil changes. They reprogrammed the computer, put a new dipstick even replaced the engine with no change. Had to keep coming in for oil consumption check and now the warranty is over. So they have effectively washed their hands of it now. Definitely want to be a part of this class action.

    1. Michelle says:

We have the exact same thing with ours. They dragged it out, had us put unnecessary mileage on it and now it’s out of warranty. They did all the same things that you stated. How convenient for Ford Canada.

  5. Irma Thibodeau says:

I have a 2018 F150 Lariat with 66,485 kms and 5 litre engine. My issue is the oil consumption usage. Oil change is due at 68,000 kms and is down below the add mark already. All my concerns have been documented with my local Ford dealer and they assured me this is within the specs. Their solution was to replace the dipstick and calibrate the motor. My fears are this will lead to a motor job as soon as the warranty expires.
If there is a class action suit in Canada on this matter, I would like to be included.

I own a ford f-150 with the 5.0 liter motor that uses excessive amounts of oil, and transmission issues as well. the dealership has don a couple of tsb fixes with no luck. I am interested in joining a class action lawsuit but do not know where to start.

  7. Ryan Mayer says:

2019 f150 with 37,000 miles was 6 quarts low in between oil changes. Now making a knocking noise. Truck is still under warranty and dealership is not that concerned about it.

  8. jon garren says:

bought this 2018 ford f150 with 28.000 on it . dealer said they just changed oil so i drove it for 3000 miles , engine light came on had it checked out found out i was 6 quarts low on oil . thought the dealer lied about changing the oil so i did a new oil change 3000 or so miles later engine light came on again so i checked oil again another 6 quarts low . that when i knew there was a problem with this engine . took to ford repair shop during the summer of 2022 new dip stick and reprogramed computer told to drive it for 1000 mile bring it back , brought it back and still burning up to 2 quarts every 1000 miles . they put oil in it told me to dive it again for 1000 miles . this has been going on for over 7 months now i have been to a ford repair shop 6 to 7 times with nothing being repaired just add oil , even having to rent my own rental car . it is clear they just want me to get to 60000 miles so the warranty will be over i am now at 56500 miles nothing has been repaired . still using up to 2 quarts every 1000 miles tired of adding oil and always being worried about it

  9. Ryan Berg says:

My 2018 F150 5.0 has the latest reprogramming done and received the new dipstick. It still sounds like a diesel and burn about 1 qt every thousand miles. I do have a extended warranty, but the warranty company states that I would have to foot the inspection and teardown bill. This needs to be handled by Ford

  10. Anthony and Brooke Rhen says:

We have a 2018 F-150 10 speed xlt 5.0 engine. We have noticed it’s constantly using oil. We took it to the dealer they did a oil tsb, oil change, and said it would be fixed with the longer dip stick, after bringing truck home and continuing to drive it still using oil and constantly having to put oil into it.
