A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.

Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.

Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.

Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.

The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

I have a 2018 4X4 with the 5.0 engine. Have had routine oil changes and have changed the oil myself numerous time. Recently heard a knocking while accelerating up through the 10 speed transmission. Concerned about the noise, when I got home I I checked underneath to see if any oil was leaking. Seeing nothing I checked the dip stick and found the oil level was not touching the dip stick. Alarmed because I had just change my oil about a month prior and had a valid full reading on the dip stick. I am now concerned about how many other times had I been driving with low or no oil and what engine damage has been caused by this condition. The Ford dealer or other shops where I had my oil changed never mentioned that the level was low during oil changes. I will be notifying my dealership of my problem. I will be monitoring my oil level alot more frequently now that I am aware of this problem.

My 2018 f150 ran completly dry of oil with no warning. Lost all power to truck while driving and heard a large clunk, I was due for a oil change so took it to the mechanic and he told me there was no oil at all even the filter was dry. I went to two Ford dealers and they both told me there was nothing wrong with the truck it just needed a system update. I insisted something was wrong and they said it would cost me a couple thousand to take the motor apart just to diagnose the problem. Another ford dealer said the repair would be upwards of $10,000.
I contacted ford Canada but they said my issue was with the dealership and had to continue dealing with them.
Nothing has been resolved and my truck is getting worse daily, running rough, very loud while idling and driving.

I have a 2019 5.0 xlt 4×4 it’s eating alot of oil between oil changes.i have been searching on line for others with the same issue.

  6. David Hudson says:

My wife’s 2018 F-150 truck started rattling under the hood (have 20% oil life left). I checked the oil and there was none on the dipstick. I added 4quarts just to barely get it to show on the stick. Have an appointment Sept 26 with dealer. I now have to check my 2020 to see if it is consuming oil.

  7. Devin says:

Last oil change I was informed that the dipstick was dry. I have a 2018 XLT. Dash indicator was never low and I’ve never noticed before. I kept an eye on it this time and I’m down 4 litres after driving 4000kms. Not very happy. I would like to know how to join this lawsuit if possible

  8. Jody Rose says:

I purchased an F150 with this motor in 2018 and have also experienced low oil issues that the dealer supposedly corrected but am still having issues. I would like to be included in this case.

  9. Michal Boguslawski says:

Honestly, since getting my 2019 F150 Lariat, I’ve been busy with work and a new kid so I defaulted to getting my oil changed at the dealership. Now that I had more time I started changing it myself again and just noticed that 8.8 went in and only about 4.5 came out… Glad to see I’m not the only one but I definitely will be keeping an eye on this….

  10. Matt West says:

Purchased a new 2018 F150 XLT with the 5.0L “Coyote” engine and realized I had a problem when I happened to check the oil at 1,500 miles and found ZERO oil in the truck! The dip stick was completely dry. I received a free oil change and was placed on an “oil consumption watch”. Since this issue began, I have been through multiple Ford TSBs, had my PCV valve replaced, multiple oil changes, and here I sit, three years later and only 20K mikes on the truck, without proper resolution! Still 3,000 miles under my next service mileage and once again, I’m out of oil! The kicker, I just called my local Ford dealership and was told to drop off the truck and they should be able to get to it over the next several days. So, once again, I’m without my vehicle for days. This is my third F150 and I have never been so disappointed with Ford.
