Health Canada has announced an investigation into two types of masks after users complained about headaches and breathing issues.
The agency warned users against one type of mask last week after a concerned citizen reported health complications to the agency after wearing a SNN200642 model imported by Metallifer. The sweeping recall affects Quebec transit workers, schools, daycares, and health networks who received more than 30.6 million of the SNN200642 masks from the ministries of family, education, and higher education, according to CTV News.
Now, it appears that another model of masks supplied by Metallifer may be dangerous to users as well. Experts told CTV News this week that the substance that makes up the liners of these blue and grey masks, graphene, may cause health problems for the workers who wore them.
“Health Canada has conducted a preliminary scientific assessment and has identified a potential for early lung toxicity in rats from inhaled graphene,” the substance coating the masks, said Health Canada spokesperson André Gagnon.
In addition to the recalled SNN200642 model, another graphene lined mask imported by Metallifer is also under investigation by the health agency.
Indeed, users reported increased headaches and the feeling of “breathing in cat hair” after wearing the graphene-lined masks, reports CTV News. A teacher told reporters that she noticed a change after the masks were introduced several months ago, including headaches and the smell of plastic.
“I just now feel a bit betrayed that something government-mandated was causing harm to us,” the Quebec kindergarten teacher told CTV News, noting that she tried to use her own medical masks instead of the now recalled masks provided by the school.
The import of such masks in Canada faces little regulation, reports CTV News. However, Health Canada is currently investigating the masks containing graphene over concerns that the substance may cause lung damage, especially in the very young and elderly.
The substance, nanoform graphene, is a “novel” material, according to experts who spoke to CTV News. While there are nanoparticles that occur naturally, manmade substances may carry unknown health risks, including damage to the lungs and other organs when inhaled.
“They’re so small, they can accumulate in our lung alveoli,” Richard Nho, a research scientist at the University of Minnesota told reporters of nanoparticles. “They can circulate, they can move to everywhere in your body, even [your] brain. That’s why we say they can be dangerous and they can be toxic.”
Quebec company Metallifer reportedly imports the masks under investigation from China.
In a statement reported by CTV News, the company said that the products imported from China “were fully qualified at the time.”
“Since the beginning of the pandemic, Metallifer has used its vast network of suppliers in China to offer its customers quality protective masks that meet current standards,” Metallifer president Michel Filion said in a statement.
Since reports of health complications, the company has told consumers to stop using the masks and has halted sales of remaining products, according to CTV.

My 11 year old son was given these masks by his school. The older kids were forced to wear this model that was given to them by the school board. He has been wheezing constantly and sleeping more than usual.

I had started housekeeping with AHS March 8th are mandated to wear these masks. March 26th I was admitted to ER for bacterial pneumonia. I sweat while working and felt extremely ill one day. I think my body was getting tired of not getting fresh air. I went on antibiotics and still no change so I will be booking an apt next week for another look at my right lung. I have felt that the masks made me sick with this bacterial pneumonia. This statement helps rectify that thought.
I’m in my early 20’s, in Alberta, this news is not surprising as a lot of the masks my previous employer handed out you were pulling little fibres out of your mouth all day like cat hairs. A few girls I work with even went and got chest X-rays done as they were having similar issues and “spots” showed up on their lungs and they were told by the DR’s it’s the fibreglass from the masks? I and other people I know were in good health before having to wear a mask. Now after a year of having to constantly wear the mask at work/shopping I have been suffering from really bad headaches in the mornings after I work and when I get home, fatigue to the point I want to sleep all day, my nose runs non-stop while wearing the mask and I now cough in the mornings when I wake up like a smoker and have never experienced this before. I’ve stopped wearing surgical masks all together and am still experiencing these symptoms, although they aren’t as severe as before they’re still noticeable.

I am a health professional im BC. Wearing a mask is now part of my job and of course these masks are the most “professional” looking. I have been experiencing severe headaches, fatigue and it feels as though I have taken up smoking. Reading this I feel betrayed by my government. The government that is supposed to be for me and my family. I pay them my hard earned dollars to do so. This is disgusting and in my opinion an enormous violation of my health. I am grateful for this truth and if there is a suit, sign me up.
I am asthmatic and the blue masks will set off an attack if I wear them. I am grateful that I have been given different masks to wear so I am able to continue to work.
Headaches, runny nose &:watery eyes!
I wheeze at night when I’ve had to wear a mask all day. My nose runs non stop when I have the mask on. I can’t breathe and feel like I’m gasping for air with the mask on. Please help me.
Since I started wearing the mask I have developed many lung issues.
I’m 30 year old women normally healthy and my lungs have gone to crap since I have been wearing the mask I have caught with my employer, the labour board, human rights. My doctor has referred me to several specialist. My work refuses to accommodate me. I am taking two puffers daily that don’t seem to help a medication nightly in the last 4 months I have been prescribed prednisone 3 times and there’s no answers even with all the test why I cannot breath.
