Canada Frozen Mango Hepatitis A Outbreak Overview:

  • Who: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a food recall warning for various frozen mango products from Nature’s Touch Frozen Food Inc.
  • Why: The recall was announced after three laboratory-confirmed cases of hepatitis A were connected to the frozen mango products.
  • Where: The recalled products have been distributed in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Cases of hepatitis A infection related to contaminated frozen mango continue to be reported to Canada’s Public Health Agency, months after people first started reporting feeling sick.

On Friday, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore issued a statement updating the public on the issue, Caledon Enterprise reported.

He reiterated that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a food recall warning for various frozen mango products from Nature’s Touch Frozen Food Inc. due to a possible hepatitis A contamination.

“In addition, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has declared an outbreak of hepatitis A infections occurring in Québec and Nova Scotia with exposure to frozen mangoes identified as the likely source of the outbreak,” he said.

“The investigation is ongoing, and cases of infection continue to be reported to PHAC.”

Nature’s Touch Frozen Food Inc. is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The Public Health Agency said people first became sick between late March 2021 and mid June 2021. No hospitalizations or deaths had been reported as of July 31.

Three laboratory-confirmed cases of hepatitis A illness were investigated in Québec and Nova Scotia, with two of the people who became sick reporting consuming frozen mangoes before their illnesses occurred. Leftover frozen mangoes were collected from the homes of ill individuals and tested positive for hepatitis A, PHAC said.

The CFIA has issued a food recall warning for various frozen mangoes sold under various brands.

The recalled products have been distributed in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories. For more information on the recalled products, click here

If you are unsure whether a frozen mango product you have in your home is part of the food recall warning, do not consume it, the CFIA says.

“Secure the product in a plastic bag, throw it out and wash your hands with warm soapy water.

“If you order food and drinks containing frozen mangoes at a restaurant or food establishment, ask the staff whether the mangoes are part of the food recall warning.”

Hepatitis A infections can occur among people of all ages, however those with underlying liver disease are at increased risk for severe illness, the CFIA said.

Incidents of hepatitis A contamination have resulted in class action settlements in the past.

In April this year, Groupe Adonis Inc. agreed to a $775,000 class action settlement resolving claims it sold products contaminated with hepatitis A. In spring 2018, the supermarket company recalled several products over potential hepatitis A contamination.

We use frozen mangoes in our smoothie drinks. I buy frozen which is so convenient & last longer. I have a bag in my freezer right now that I have already used a couple cups. I always buy Natures Touch. This is very concerning to me & my family. I have now bagged this product from this company & will refrain from purchasing frozen mangoes from any company.

  2. Shawna Squire says:

Please add me . We make smoothies just about every morning, we love adding mango to our smoothie mix because it gives it that extra kick that we like. We shop at all major grocery stores and have purchased all different brands, now we can’t add mangoes to our smoothies anymore because we don’t trust that it’s safe
    after hearing about the recall.

  3. Victoria E. Lehman says:

This past week I was assessed by my symptoms by Manitoba Health Services as having had exposure and symptoms after having switched from fresh sliced mango at the Safeway (they stopped offering it, likely to cut their costs) to Compliments frozen mango pieces.
I was very soon after given a Hep A vaccine shot, and many of my symptoms (itch with no rash, extreme fatigue, sweats, fever, respiratory, etc.) have now abated, but the fatigue/lack of physical strength and stamina, are still an issue.
Please let me know if there is a class action where I can sign up.
Who would have thought that just “grocery shopping” would take me down!
