Sephora Hair Care Olaplex Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Hair product manufacturer Olaplex is being sued by customers who claim one of its products contains a dangerous chemical, and Sephora Canada is being sued for selling it.
  • Why: The class action lawsuit alleges Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the serious health risks associated with the ingredient.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

An Olaplex hair care product sold at Sephora is at the center of a new class action lawsuit that alleges the company did not tell consumers it contains a “dangerous chemical.”

In the class action lawsuit filed against Sephora Canada and Olaplex Mar. 3 in the Superior Court of Quebec, consumers allege that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector contains a chemical with serious health risks.

According to the Olaplex class action lawsuit, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector, which was sold at Sephora, contains butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial).

Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the “serious health risks” associated with the ingredient, the class action lawsuit alleges. It states that side effects of exposure to lilial include allergies and potentially even infertility.

According to court documents, the company only admitted to being conscious of the risks linked to lilial on Feb. 28, 2022.

Sephora Kept Selling Olaplex Containing Lilial, Plaintiffs Allege

Olaplex says, since then, the chemical has been removed from the hair care product globally.

However, the lawsuit alleges Sephora Canada continues to sell Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing lilial.

The consumers are looking to represent anyone who purchased Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (lilial) in Canada.

They’re seeking punitive damages in the amount of $10 million and refunds for each consumer who bought the product for around $43 including tax per bottle.

Last year, a woman claimed that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair and even significant hair loss.

  1. Jessica Victor says:

I started using their products to help protect my hair from a silk press. I used it and it made my hair feel brittle and I believe I experienced some shedding.

  2. Joy Hill says:

I started using Olaplex products (3,4,5,6,&7) May 2022. At first everything worked, but after only a month I started noticing my hair coming out. It once got worse from there. My hair became so dry, brittle, broken, and falling out at the roots. I lost over half my hair by August. I thought I was investing in a good quality hair product only to regret ever using this awful product! Buyer beware run do not walk away from Olaplex!

i purchased #3 olaplex in november of 2020. ended up not finishing the bottle due to the fact i noticed my hair was breaking more than usual and drier than ever. i just assumed i wasnt one of the lucky ones to have good results like i had seen on the internet. i would get scalp irritation as i already have sensitive skin and olaplex just heightened my issue. so i stopped use. Still have the bottle & whats left of product. the only con was when in use it made my hair almost too soft…too good to be true then damaged even more. i havent chemically treated my hair since 2019 and i dont use heat products. I have well water where i live as well.

  4. Desiree Jackson says:

I have been blonde for many years and started to use the entire product line and noticed my hair thinning and coming out in clumps and I even got a bald spot I changed my hair care to a different brand and the shedding ft stopped and slowly my bald spot started growing again my diet and exercise did not change more any major events in my life

  5. Leslie D. says:

I purchased Olaplex in 2021 and experienced a good affect after the first few washes (half the bottle). I even added no 4 & 5 to my hair routine. But over the next few months my hair was coming out in clumps in the shower and my hair was dry and brittle. Please add me to the class action lawsuit.

  6. Amanda Lufcy says:

I have been experiencing shedding, breakage, and super dry hair. I’ve been using Olaplex for several years now. I started with just the No. 3, but have since bought multiple sets of 0-9. I am so upset that there were chemicals in this that were causing my hair to be damaged and to lose it. I definitely want to be added to a class action suit once one comes about.

  7. Mary Polito says:

I have been using Olaplex for two years , my hair is damaged to the point that I wear extentions to cover balding areas
How do I get in on this law suit?

I would love to hear as well! I am in the same situation.

  8. Annette Serrao says:

My hairdresser and I couldn’t figure out why I was losing my hair. It is do to Olaplex. Ever since I started using it my fair has been getting so thin and breaking. I’ve had to put extentions because otherwise I look like I’m balding. This product destroyed my hair.

  9. Amanda says:

I have used this product for at least 4 years, I have experience thinner and breakages of my hair! I am outraged by this product and have stopped using it since then.

  10. Nicole says:

This is so crazy! I’ve been using Olaplex 4 & 5 Bond Maintenance from Sephora and have noticed instantly more scalp irritation and thinning hair. Not only on the sides of my head, but I’d run my fingers through my hair and would have handfuls come out at a time. This has been going on since October 2022 and couldn’t figure out why until I decided to switch back to another shampoo. Please add me to this!!
