Sephora Hair Care Olaplex Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Hair product manufacturer Olaplex is being sued by customers who claim one of its products contains a dangerous chemical, and Sephora Canada is being sued for selling it.
  • Why: The class action lawsuit alleges Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the serious health risks associated with the ingredient.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

An Olaplex hair care product sold at Sephora is at the center of a new class action lawsuit that alleges the company did not tell consumers it contains a “dangerous chemical.”

In the class action lawsuit filed against Sephora Canada and Olaplex Mar. 3 in the Superior Court of Quebec, consumers allege that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector contains a chemical with serious health risks.

According to the Olaplex class action lawsuit, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector, which was sold at Sephora, contains butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial).

Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the “serious health risks” associated with the ingredient, the class action lawsuit alleges. It states that side effects of exposure to lilial include allergies and potentially even infertility.

According to court documents, the company only admitted to being conscious of the risks linked to lilial on Feb. 28, 2022.

Sephora Kept Selling Olaplex Containing Lilial, Plaintiffs Allege

Olaplex says, since then, the chemical has been removed from the hair care product globally.

However, the lawsuit alleges Sephora Canada continues to sell Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing lilial.

The consumers are looking to represent anyone who purchased Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (lilial) in Canada.

They’re seeking punitive damages in the amount of $10 million and refunds for each consumer who bought the product for around $43 including tax per bottle.

Last year, a woman claimed that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair and even significant hair loss.

I have experienced hair loss, bald spots and brittle hair from using Olaplex products. When I used #1 my head blistered.

    1. Lorie Alford says:

I was excited to start this product. My stylist questioned what I was doing differently bc my hair was breaking off and was extremely dry. I am faithful to seeing my stylist every 4-6 weeks She advised me to use only once a month in small amount with my normal products bc my hair felt damaged. And she was scared to even foil my hair bc it was breaking off so bad. This was something I’ve never experienced. My head itched and noticed significant hair loss. Once I went back to my normal regiment my hair has just started feeling healthier. I was in the middle of figuring out this was the problem when I seen others were having similar problems.
