Sephora Hair Care Olaplex Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Hair product manufacturer Olaplex is being sued by customers who claim one of its products contains a dangerous chemical, and Sephora Canada is being sued for selling it.
  • Why: The class action lawsuit alleges Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the serious health risks associated with the ingredient.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

An Olaplex hair care product sold at Sephora is at the center of a new class action lawsuit that alleges the company did not tell consumers it contains a “dangerous chemical.”

In the class action lawsuit filed against Sephora Canada and Olaplex Mar. 3 in the Superior Court of Quebec, consumers allege that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector contains a chemical with serious health risks.

According to the Olaplex class action lawsuit, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector, which was sold at Sephora, contains butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial).

Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the “serious health risks” associated with the ingredient, the class action lawsuit alleges. It states that side effects of exposure to lilial include allergies and potentially even infertility.

According to court documents, the company only admitted to being conscious of the risks linked to lilial on Feb. 28, 2022.

Sephora Kept Selling Olaplex Containing Lilial, Plaintiffs Allege

Olaplex says, since then, the chemical has been removed from the hair care product globally.

However, the lawsuit alleges Sephora Canada continues to sell Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing lilial.

The consumers are looking to represent anyone who purchased Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (lilial) in Canada.

They’re seeking punitive damages in the amount of $10 million and refunds for each consumer who bought the product for around $43 including tax per bottle.

Last year, a woman claimed that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair and even significant hair loss.

I started using olaplex after growing my hair out for 5 years and with in a month it all broke off and was so short. I was embarrassed to go out, I didn’t know what was going on. I had my hair exactly how I wanted it but I wanted it a little smoother and they said to use olaplex so I bought the whole kit about $150 worth and that was in October and by Christmas my hair had all broken off! Totally humiliated because my Appra Ruiz important in my job! Devastated!

  2. Maria Gomes says:

After starting the use of Olaplex in my hair I noticed my hair was falling out in clumps. I have so much breakage in my hair and balding spots from using the Olaplex products. I thought it was just me but now this all makes sense because upon discontinuing the products my hair stopped falling out like that. Now I am spending so much money trying to salvage my hair and get it back and healthy again! I want to speak to an attorney. This is insane!!!!! What this has done to my self esteem smh unreal I am so upset! I knew it and hair dressers kept saying these products are so good smh

  3. Tina says:

#3 After using my hair was coming out in CLUMPS!

  4. Arlene P says:

I have had significant hair loss, mostly from breakage that was working its way up according to my hairdresser. She also took note of some areas that were thinning out. I was using Olaplex. It began at the end of 2021. I could not figure out what was causing it and I did change product this year. My hairdresser knew nothing about hair loss relating to Olaplex. My breakage was traveling upward such that my hair is significantly short versus long hair that I used to have. I have been using hair growth supplements to aid in regrowth.

  5. Mary says:

I cannot believe what has transpired at this time, I too have thinning hair and itchy irritated scalp.
After spending hundreds of dollars supporting this product, this is a crime and people need to be compensated !
Many salons have been using this product in their salons !!! I too want in on this lawsuit. Please send information.

  6. Kimberly Scolaro says:

I have been using Olaplex for over 2 months and I also noticed my hair is much frizzier and I do have hair loss every time I used the product. I used the shampoo, conditioner and hair mask and my hair just kept staying frizzy. I went back to my old shampoo that I used before the Olaplex and I defiantly can tell the difference. I would like to get involved in this law suit. For myself with fine thin hair I defiantly can’t afford to have frizz and hair loss. I went back to Balman which is a really good shampoo it does not make my hair frizzy…

  7. Jessica Stanford says:

  9. Ruby Rogers says:

I lost 90% of my hair after using olaplex hair products and I have the pictures to prove it. I had several bald spots, brittle hair and the entire texture of my hair changed. How do I join the lawsuit?

  10. Christin Cook Zito says:

Add me to the list! Been using oleplex for a few years and stopped when all the hair on the back of my head and top of my head broke off like a men’s cut. I am a celebrity hairstylist and it’s is incredibly embarrassing for me. I now have to use extensions to hide my hair. Used olaplex 3, 4,5, 0 and salon purchased all in one

    1. Felechia Dees says:

I too have suffered severe hair loss and damage after using their product. I sent the company an email regarding my hair loss on February 10th, I was given a case number but it appears the company has since disabled their email address to report issues and complaints. My follow up email came back as undeliverable. I have bald spots and hair loss with pictures to support.
