Sephora Hair Care Olaplex Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Hair product manufacturer Olaplex is being sued by customers who claim one of its products contains a dangerous chemical, and Sephora Canada is being sued for selling it.
  • Why: The class action lawsuit alleges Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the serious health risks associated with the ingredient.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

An Olaplex hair care product sold at Sephora is at the center of a new class action lawsuit that alleges the company did not tell consumers it contains a “dangerous chemical.”

In the class action lawsuit filed against Sephora Canada and Olaplex Mar. 3 in the Superior Court of Quebec, consumers allege that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector contains a chemical with serious health risks.

According to the Olaplex class action lawsuit, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector, which was sold at Sephora, contains butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial).

Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the “serious health risks” associated with the ingredient, the class action lawsuit alleges. It states that side effects of exposure to lilial include allergies and potentially even infertility.

According to court documents, the company only admitted to being conscious of the risks linked to lilial on Feb. 28, 2022.

Sephora Kept Selling Olaplex Containing Lilial, Plaintiffs Allege

Olaplex says, since then, the chemical has been removed from the hair care product globally.

However, the lawsuit alleges Sephora Canada continues to sell Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing lilial.

The consumers are looking to represent anyone who purchased Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (lilial) in Canada.

They’re seeking punitive damages in the amount of $10 million and refunds for each consumer who bought the product for around $43 including tax per bottle.

Last year, a woman claimed that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair and even significant hair loss.

Hi I have been using olaplex no3 for a while now and didn’t know the hair loss was due to that. How can I be added to the lawsuit ?

  2. Amanda says:

My hair and scalp were also damaged from using Olaplex products. I was using Olaplex products for 3 years. My hair was getting so brittle and noticeably thinning. I had an incident where after an Olaplex treatment my scalp felt like it was burning so bad I needed to go to a dermatologist and get steroid solutions as well as steroid injections. I lost more hair and continued seeing a dermatologist to figure out what was causing this. I would love to join this lawsuit. Please send me any information on how to join!

First bought Olapex mini repair kit during the pandemic and loved it, so bought full size bottkes, the mask and styling products…little did I know was that using these products made my already thin, highlighted hair fall out and wreak havoc on my self esteem.
I would switch back and forth another brand (hers) to try and fix the issue (not knowing it was planked causing it).. I did start using Olaplex only from August 2022 until January 2023 and now IT MAKES SENSE why I had to constantly clean my hair brush of dead/broken hair. It killed me when numerous ppl would ask if I had cut my hair bc I hadn’t since june2023!
I stopped using olaplex mid January 2023 (switched to redken acidic bonding line) and no more hair falling out or breaking!! What this company did to my hair and self esteem is horrific! I’m so insecure of I wear my hair down, since it’s all different lengths growing out and only thicker on top now. Must have spent over $250 on something I trusted would make my hair better! Now I just want my pre-Olaplex hair back!!! Every time I’m getting ready I cry to my boyfriend how much I hate my hair and get too insecure to even leave the house.

I still have half bottles and heard they were refunding due to a “voluntary” recall, but cannot find any information on how too? Also, please add me for this lawsuit or how can start one against Olaplex. They should not get away with what they are doing!

How can I be added to the lawsuit?

  5. Carole Stephen says:

Started using Olaplex in January and my hair has become dry and brittle not to mention breakage.
Also thinning of hair and scalp irritation.

  6. Nancy Hayden says:

I had been using the product until my hair stylist said your losing hair in front and asked what I was using . But then I saw the story on GMA I knew I had to stop . How do I file for a Class Action .

  7. Sofia Menis says:

I’ve been buying Olaplex products for around 3 years now because they were highly recommended. I struggle with my hair and the damaged colouring it has caused and I bought Olaplex because it was a “trusted” brand. Around a year ago, I find out that they were using this harmful product, and I had to throw away most of my Olaplex products. That’s hundreds of dollars down the drain, all because I trusted the wrong brand. Not to mention I don’t know the long term effects. Never buying from Olaplex again.

  8. Andrea Veliov says:

Does anyone know how to be added to the lawsuit?

  9. K. Hernandez says:

I used Olaplex hoping for hydration and protection, for my naturally curly hair. Instead, my hair turned brittle and I have hair loss and breakage. I would like to be added to this lawsuit

  10. Ta-Shi Thomas says:

I bought the HAIR REPAIR TREATMENT KIT in January 2023. The first time I used it, my hair seemed soft and hydrated. I got my hair trimmed and put into a protective style. I couldn’t keep my hair in the protective style because my scalp was dry and had thick dermatitis/scabs. After a week, I began to take down my protective style and my hair started to come out in clumps. Hand fulls of hair was coming out. I definitely need to be added to this suit!

    1. Jenna Wirtes says:

Same exact thing happened to me!! My hair elastics would be completely covered In hair!!
