Meta agreed to a $51 million Facebook settlement to resolve claims sponsored stories utilized user information without consent.
The Facebook sponsored stories settlement benefits residents of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Newfoundland and Labrador who had a Facebook account registered to their real name or an identifiable self-image as a profile picture and whose real name, identifiable picture or both Facebook used in a sponsored story between Jan. 1, 2011, and May 30, 2014.
According to the class action lawsuit, Meta violated Canadian privacy laws by using real names and identifying photos in sponsored stories. Plaintiffs in the case claim that they did not give consent for this information use.
