Canada methane regulations overview:

  • Why: Canada says it strengthened its oil and gas methane regulations to reduce its oil and gas methane emissions by at least 75% from 2012 levels by 2030.
  • Where: The updated oil and gas emissions rules apply to Canada.

The Canadian government announced strengthened oil and gas methane regulations it says “makes good” on its goal of becoming the first country to reduce oil and gas methane emissions by at least 75% from 2012 levels by 2030.

Steven Guilbeault, Canada’s minister of environment and climate change, announced the new regulations, which amended 2018 regulations, at the Global Methane Pledge Ministerial in Dubai Dec. 4, according to a news release

“Lowering methane emissions from our oil and gas sector is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways we can cut the pollution that is fueling climate change,” Guilbeault says in the news release.

Canada’s updated oil and gas methane rules will eliminate routine venting and flaring, enhance leak detection and repair and address problems such as blowdowns and other potentially large methane releases, according to the government.

Canada on track to meet methane reduction target by 2025, government says

The government says it is on track to meet a methane reduction target of 40-45% below 2012 levels by 2025 and that the updated rules will reduce cumulative emissions by 217 megatonnes from 2027 to 2040.

Canada’s updated oil and gas methane regulations will also have positive social and economic benefits of $12.4 billion from avoided global damages, according to the press release.

“At this time of robust profit margins and high energy prices, there has never been a better time for the oil and gas sector to invest in slashing methane emissions,” Guilbeault says in the release.

More than 150 countries have already signed the Global Methane Pledge, committing them to a collective goal of reducing methane emissions caused by humans by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030, according to the government.

A judge tossed a lawsuit a group of teens filed against Canada arguing it was responsible for contributing to greenhouse gas emissions that threatened the lives of future generations in 2020.

Justice Michael D. Manson ruled the complaint was ultimately unjustifiable in court, determining the lawsuit failed “on the basis that there are some questions that are so political that the courts are incapable or unsuited to deal with them.”
