The city of Leduc has agreed to a settlement resolving a class action lawsuit that claimed the city’s female employees were subjected to discrimination, sexual misconduct and sexual assault.

The settlement benefits all female current and former employees who worked for the city of Leduc between Jan. 1, 2002, and July 4, 2023, who allege they were subject to discrimination, sexual misconduct or sexual assault as Leduc employees during this period.

The plaintiffs, two female firefighters who worked for the Leduc Fire Department, alleged Leduc failed to prevent systemic sexual misconduct and sexual assault, discouraged the reporting of it and retaliated against women that did, and protected individuals that had committed sexual misconduct and sexual assault.

Leduc is a city in Alberta, Canada. The city employs about 450 people.

Eligible members of the class can claim between $10,000 and $285,000, depending on the level of harm assessed.

To make a claim, class members must fill out a claim form. The form will direct the claimant to check boxes about the harm they experienced in the workplace and has spaces to add additional information and witnesses.

The claimant must then affirm the truth of the information before a commissioner of oaths and submit it by email or regular mail to the administrator.

Claimants may also request to participate in a program of restorative engagement that has been designed to allow class members to share their experiences of sexual harassment, sexual assault or discrimination with senior Leduc management.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the Leduc class action settlement is Sept. 4, 2023.

A final approval hearing in the settlement was held July 4, 2023.

Class members must submit their claim forms by Aug. 4, 2024.
