man taking u-dream life sleeping pillsA class action lawsuit filed in Canada alleges that “U-Dream Life” sleep-aids led to a British Columbia trucker’s heart attack.

Lead plaintiff James Ruckman says in the U-Dream Life sleep aid class action lawsuit that he bought the herbal supplement at a Whole Foods store in B.C. in September 2019.

The plaintiff claims he took the supplement for 10 days after he purchased it. On Sept. 30, Ruckman alleges that he had a heart attack.

The heart attack left him in the hospital for 12 days, says the plaintiff. During that time, he allegedly lost both his job as a truck driver and his license.

U-Dream Life sleep-aid is allegedly manufactured by Biotrade. It was sold over-the-counter in both the U.S. and Canada. However, health agencies in both countries have recently issued warnings about a hidden ingredient in the so-called dietary supplement.

Health Canada issued a warning about U-Dream herbal sleep-aid and similar products on Dec. 12, 2019.

“Health Canada is advising Canadians that it has tested several U-Dream Lite and U-Dream Full Night herbal sleep-aid products and has found that they contain a substance similar to the prescription drug zopiclone, which may pose serious health risks,” says the health agency’s statement.

The statement further notes that, while zopiclone is used to treat insomnia, it carries side effects, including “drowsiness, dizziness, memory loss, hallucinations and abnormal sleep behaviours while not fully awake including sleep driving.”

The agency also states that users can become dependent on the substance and, if they abruptly stop taking zopiclone, they may suffer severe effects, including convulsions, tremor, muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating, hallucinations and difficulty sleeping.

Health Canada indicates in its statement that it made the manufacture and sale of U-Dream Life sleep-aid products illegal by suspending the products’ licenses. The agency notes that reports of other side effects may indicate that other ingredients are included in the product.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a similar warning over U-Dream Full Night. The agency issued a notification on Dec. 18, 2019 warning the public that the product contains a hidden ingredient structurally similar to a prescription medication called Lunesta with the active ingredient eszopiclone.

“Eszopiclone and zopiclone are known to cause impairment of driving and other activities that require alertness the next morning or next day after use. These ingredients may also cause dry mouth, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, memory loss, and abnormal thoughts and behavior,” warns the FDA.

The FDA statement also warns the public of a growing trend that may pose a hazard. Dietary supplements and even conventional foods, warns the agency, have been found laced with hidden chemicals.

Generally, these items are touted for weight loss, improved sex drive or performance, and bodybuilding. They are often advertised as “all natural.”

“FDA is unable to test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that have potentially harmful hidden ingredients. Consumers should exercise caution before purchasing any product in the above categories.”

According to the U-Dream Life sleep-aid class action lawsuit, Biotrade has also warned consumers about its own product, advising them to discontinue use until the company conducts its own studies.

I am in the midst of trying to detox from UDream. I feel as though I have been ‘duped’ as I am very health conscious and refuse to take medications for sleep. A friend recommended this as it advertised as a herbal sleep aid. I was amazed at how well it worked as a herbal supplement and was thrilled I was sleeping. When I tried to buy more I found out that it was pulled from the shelves. I immediately tried to stop taking it but a night without it meant heavy sweating, heart racing and migraines. It has affected my work performance and my personal life as I feel completely erratic and emotional not to mention exhausted and unable to function normally. I have been trying to wean myself off the drug by administering small doses. I feel so upset about this as I was fooled. I have had many surgeries where I am prescribed oxy or percasets and I refuse to take any with the fear of becoming addicted. I feel that this company knowingly tried to make users addicted to buy their product and I feel that it is criminal as I would never have purchased knowing that there was any strong medication in the product.
Feeling fooled and wanting my health and sanity back!!!

For well over a year my wife and I took U-Dream. We started out taking it on and off and then became dependent on it (unbeknownst to us at the time, we just thought we were having difficulty sleeping and only U-Dream worked — we now know we had grown dependent upon it). After Health Canada’s notification we both stopped taking it with terrible results. My wife had to quit her job (at a health supplement store), I needed time off work, and both of us have continued to go through the same withdrawal symptoms as described by previous respondents. It’s been over a month now and even with our doctor’s intervention we are still experiencing anxiety, an inability to sleep, weird intense dreams when we do sleep, brain fog, depression, heart palpitations, tremors, numbness, tingling, weight loss… the list goes on and on. It’s been an ongoing and horrible experience for us both. We are both outraged and would love to join any class action suit. Who is the contact/law firm for pursuing any legal action? This has truly impacted us physically, emotionally, and mentally on a daily and what appears to be on an ongoing basis.

We live in Spain and would like to know if We can join the class action suit against udream? My husband is very angry since they advertised natural ingredients! He had been taking the pills for a couple of weeks or more and although they worked, he would get up very groggy and disoriented and couldn’t understand why. He finally received an email from Amazon.es informing him of the possible dangers. Thank you.

I took U-Dream all natural sleep aid for months after a couple in my yoga class recommended it to me. It was the only sleep aid that helped me sleep and I took it every night since I thought it was safe. It worked great except for a couple of times when I woke up in a panic because I felt like I couldn’t breathe. When I went to reorder it on Amazon early January it was no longer available. I was so upset and started looking for it online when I found the articles about it being recalled. I couldn’t believe that I wasn’t notified by Amazon which allowed me to keep taking it. Now since I stopped taking it my insomnia has been maddening and causing me extreme anxiety when it comes to bedtime. Anyone else experiencing the same problem since taking U-Dream?

  6. Wendy Fazzolari says:

I took udream almost every night. When I heard about the recall I stopped. I have had brain shakes almost electrical shocks ever since. I have seen my doctor and a neurologist with no real results. It’s very nerve racking and actually scares me to death. Thought I was doing the right thing going natural. Guess not ah!

  7. Maria Berlando-Bohnet says:

I have had terrible rebound insomnia after taking Udream (thinking it was a natural supplement, I took it every night). I haven’t been able to sleep and I have anxiety that is affecting every part of my life.

  8. Karen Carruer says:

While taking U Dream I was waking up shaking with heart palpitations & feelings of panic & anxiety. I also had incidents of sleep-driving, sleeo-walkjng & hearing a voice calling my name.
At first it seemed to help me sleep but after a few weeks I would either sleep very little & often couldn’t sleep at all.
This has affected by life in many ways, especially my performance at work has been seriously adversely affected.
I am very angry that I took this “natural” sleep aid trusting it would be of benefit. As turns it out, that was quite the opposite.
Now that I’ve stopped taking it I am suffering anxiety & other withdrawal symptoms, including not being able to sleep at all.

Is there a Class action Lawsuits happening regarding the sleep aid U Dream?
