Make it a resolution to check your freezer for recalled foods. Four heat-and-eat meals from the brand Save-on-Foods are being recalled in Canada this new year due to possible salmonella contamination.ย
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued the recall Dec. 31, saying it was triggered by its inspection activities.
The recall applies to the Save-on-Foods Lemon Chicken Combo Meal, Sweet & Sour Pork Meal, Ginger Beef Combo Meal and Honey Garlic Chicken Combo Meal, all of which are in 450 gram packages.ย
The meals were sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon, and the lot numbers can be found here.
The CFIA said there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the Save-on-Foods products; however, it is still recalling them.ย
โThe Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak of human illness,โ the recall says.ย
It links to a Public Health Notice on an active investigation of an outbreak of salmonella infections in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.ย
Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Frozen Corn, According To Public Health Notice
Based on the investigation findings to date, the outbreak is linked to Alasko brand frozen whole kernel corn. It is not clear how the corn is linked to the heat-and-eat meals.
However, the CFIA is advising consumers to check to see if they have the recalled products in their homes, and to refrain from consuming them.ย
โRecalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased,โ the recall says. Those who are feeling sick should see a doctor.ย
The CFIA says food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.ย
Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections from it.ย
Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.ย
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
- In 2020, Thomson International Inc. was hit with multiple class action lawsuits stemming from a large salmonella outbreak in Canada that was allegedly caused by contaminated onions. The outbreak was, at the time, the single largest outbreak of foodborne illness in Canada since 2014.
