deflated airbags inside car regarding several airbag recalls

Transport Canada has issued a series of recalls over airbag problems, including incorrect warning language, potential loosening of the safety device, and an issue with airbag inflators.

Airbags are considered a supplementary restraint system meant to be used in addition to a seat belt, according to the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals. Front airbags prevent a passenger’s head from coming into contact with the wheel or dashboard in the event of a crash. Side airbags provide torso and head protection.

Airbags inflate when a computer sensor is triggered by an impact. According to CARSP, when a car’s sensors are triggered by an impact, they send an electrical signal to a pyrotechnic gas generator. These generators allow gas to deploy quickly into a fabric bag that expands, providing a cushion for vehicle occupants involved in the crash.

Early systems are less sophisticated than modern airbags. While airbags are safe for most adults, CARSP warns that children under the age of 12 should not sit in the front seat because of potential injury from the airbag. Additionally, infant car seats should never be installed in the front passenger side of a vehicle with activated airbags.

Airbag Inflator Problems Force Recall of Some 2017 BMWs

According to a recall notice issued by Transport Canada, model year 2017 BMW 5 Series and 7 Series vehicles are affected by an airbag problem. The inflator in the side curtain airbags in these vehicles may cause the device to inflate with more force than normal in an accident, says the agency.

The problem may also cause the inflator to separate. If separation occurs, notes the agency, pieces of the device could shoot toward those in the car.

Both of these issues could increase the risk of injury in a car accident, says Transport Canada.

“To reduce the safety risk, BMW recommends that you should not carry any passengers in your car until the recall repairs are completed,” states the recall notice as a corrective action. “BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to replace the left and/or right head curtain airbags, as necessary.”

Consumers affected by this airbag recall related to inflators are encouraged to either contact BMW at 1-800-567-2691 or check if their vehicle is affected by this airbag recall on the BMW recall website.

Loose Bolts in Hyundai Genesis Coupe Results in Airbag Recall

Transport Canada has issued another airbag recall, this time because bolts that attached the driver’s side front airbag have been found to be loose.up close shot of an airbag label regarding several airbag recalls by transport Canada

“As a result, the airbag could become loose,” states the recall notice. “If you continue to operate the vehicle with a loose airbag, it may detach from the steering wheel.” The agency goes on to note that a loose or detached airbag can create an increased risk of injury in a crash.

According to the notice, the airbag recall affects approximately 400 model year 2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupes. Hyundai will be contacting owners of affected vehicles by mail with instructions. The instructions will ask owners to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer to inspect the bolts and tighten them if necessary.

Owners with questions about the airbag recall can call 1-888-216-2626 or visit the Hyundai website to see if their vehicle is impacted.

Airbag Recall Issued for Incorrect Label

A third recall has been issued, according to Transport Canada, over incorrect language on an airbag warning label in certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz cars.

According to Transport Canada’s airbag recall notice, the warning label located on the passenger side sun visor is in an incorrect language. This could lead to confusion and injury in a crash, notes the agency.

Owners will be notified by Mercedes-Benz, says the notice, and, if their vehicle is affected, they will be instructed to go to an authorized dealer who will inspect and replace the sun visor if necessary.

The vehicles affected by this airbag recall include over 1,200 model year 2019 Mercedes-Benz C Class and GLC Class vehicles.

While airbags are generally an important safety measure that helps keep vehicle occupants protected, it is important to follow safety guidelines. The CARSP recommends that vehicle passengers always wear seat belts, noting that airbags only provide additional protection.

Owners with questions can contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-387-0100.

CARSP also recommends vehicle passengers sit back from the airbag and, if they are in a crash, let the airbag inflate and do its job.
