Canadian Armed Forces Child Sex Abuse Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Bobbie Bees has filed a child sex abuse class action lawsuit against the Canadian government.
  • Why: Bees claims the Canadian government failed to protect children from sexual abuse by a Canadian Armed Forces priest.
  • Where: The lawsuit has been filed in Canada.

A child sex abuse class action lawsuit has been filed against the Canadian government over allegations it failed to protect children from sexual abuse by a Canadian Armed Forces priest, according to Global News.

Plaintiff Bobbie Bees alleges a Canadian Armed Forces priest sexually abused him as a child when he lived on a military base with his father, who was a master corporal stationed at Canadian Forces Base Namao.

Bees tells Global News he was in second grade at the time. He says he has been traumatized by the memories of the sexual abuse, and that he has attempted suicide.

Child Sex Abuse Class Action Says Canadian Government Has Not Done Enough

The alleged perpetrator, Captain Angus Mcrae, reportedly signed a confession to the Catholic Church in 1980, admitting to committing “indecent acts with several minors,” Global News reports. Mcrae, who died in 2011, was not charged for Bees’ allegations of sexual abuse, although he was reportedly charged for offences against other victims.

“I want the Canadian Forces to sit up and admit – yes, children have been sexually abused on bases,” Bees said to Global News. “It’s not just sexual abuse for a year and a half. I spent two-and-a-half years in the care of a military social worker, who at the time, was adamant it was my fault and I was exhibiting signs of what he referred to as a mental illness.”

Lawyer Mathew Farrell filed the child sex abuse class action lawsuit on behalf of Bees and more than two dozen other victims, Global News reports. He alleges the Canadian government has failed to reach out and offer compensation to victims who were abused by the Canadian Armed Forces priest.

Farrell tells Global News that the children were “failed twice over” because the priest abused his position of trust when he abused the children and yet, even after he was caught, the children did not receive the help they deserved.

“Some of the worst things that can happen to a person happened to these people and nobody has justice for them until now,” Farrell told Global News. It could take years for the child sex abuse class action lawsuit to be resolved, Farrell said.

Canadian Armed Forces Faces Numerous Sexual Misconduct Allegations

This child sex abuse class action lawsuit is not the first to allege claims of sexual misconduct within the Canadian Armed Forces. In fact, a class action lawsuit was filed last summer over allegations Mcrae abused hundreds of children at various military bases.

The number of sexual misconduct allegations within the Canadian Armed Forces has been on the rise in recent years. A number of women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. The sexual assault victims claim that their allegations have not been taken seriously by officials.
