Canadian Armed Forces sexual misconduct data breach overview:

  • Who: Another member of the Canadian Armed Forces who was a victim of sexual misconduct alleges their private information was compromised in a data breach by Epiq Class Action Services Canada.
  • Why: Epiq has been accused of accidentally sending the personal information of class members to other military members.
  • Where: The data breaches involve the Canadian Armed Forces.

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces involved in a $900 million class action settlement resolving sexual misconduct allegations has fallen victim to a data breach exposing their personal information.

Epiq Class Action Services Canada, the company overseeing the government settlement, confirmed it made another mistake after a third military member came forward saying this month that they received an email with the personal info of another claimant, Global News reports

The veteran, who has chosen to remain anonymous, says they received the erroneous email amidst a battle with Epiq after it allegedly sent her compensation cheque to an incorrect address.

The Federal Court appointed Epiq to administer the November 2019 settlement made to resolve three intersecting class action lawsuits made over claims of sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces, Global News reports.

The latest data breach brings the total number of class members who have had their personal information improperly revealed and compromised to 109.

Epiq has claimed personal info in data breaches limited to names, contact info

Previously, Epiq claimed that the personal information accidentally revealed was limited to claimants’ names and contact information and did not disclose testimonials or other sensitive documents, Global News reports.

The first instance of a data breach affecting the personal information of a class member was reported in March. Epiq previously apologized for the data breach and promised to take steps to make sure it wouldn’t happen again.

Additionally, breaches of data privacy pushed claimants, government officials and lawyers overseeing the settlement to request an independent audit of how Epiq planned to prevent future data beaches, Global News reports.

Epiq has reportedly since hired an external auditor tasked with reviewing its new procedures and recommending any changes which may be helpful.

An individual filed a separate class action lawsuit against the federal government last month, claiming it failed to protect children from sexual abuse at the hands of a Canadian Armed Forces priest.

One thought on Epiq leaks military sexual misconduct again amidst settlement

  1. S.C.B. says:

It is truly sad that the already victimized in this case are being put through the additional stress of wondering if their confidential information has been leaked. Just getting up the courage to recount (thereby relive) the experience was bad enough…this additional worry of their case’s confidentiality possibly being breached, is likely going to dissuade people from seeking justice in similar cases in the future. Victims shouldn’t have to endure this… it’s like being violated twice !
