The Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit has been certified and Class Members should start receiving notice.
The class action lawsuit alleged that, from 2004 to 2014, Global Learning Group Inc. (GLGI) solicited donations of cash and valuable software licenses based on the premise that donors would be eligible for tax credits. However, an investigation by Canada’s tax agency allegedly revealed that the donations, rather than going to underserved individuals, were funneled back into GLGI.
The Canada Revenue Agency ultimately decided to reject the claimed tax credits in 2007, and donors were charged interest and penalties, according to the Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit. A later lawsuit in Canadian tax court found that GLGI had incorrectly valued the software licenses. Further, approximately 90 percent of the donations went back to GLGI and its accomplices, instead of helping the people GLGI used to promote the charitable giving.
According to the Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit, as many as 60,000 people were scammed by the so-called gift program. The plaintiffs say that, ultimately, there was no charitable purpose to GLGI’s gift program. In 2015, the Tax Court of Canada found that the program was a “sham.”
In the Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking to recover all charitable donations paid as a part of the GLGI’s gift program, along with reimbursement for interest or penalties accrued from the Canada Revenue Agency.
According to the Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs participated in the Gift Program, some for several years, and made cash donations that they were told were eligible for a charitable tax credit. However, the plaintiffs say their tax credits were rejected by the Canada Revenue Agency – costing them money in interest and, in some cases, penalties.
The plaintiffs say that GLGI did not work alone. Several other companies were also named in the Global Learning Group ‘sham’ donation tax class action lawsuit, including IDI Strategies Inc. and JDS Corporations.
