Erie Meat Products Frozen Chicken Recall Overview:

  • Who: Erie Meat Products
  • What: Frozen All White Meat Fully Cooked Diced Chicken is being recalled due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
  • Where: Canada

Erie Meat Products is recalling all packages of its Frozen All White Meat Fully Cooked Diced Chicken as it could contain Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause dangerous infections, especially for pregnant women and the elderly. The recall was issued last Friday by the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), after being triggered by CFIA test results.ย ย

Nursing homes, hospitals, retailers, distributors, manufacturers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants and cafeterias should not serve, use or sell the recalled product, the agency says.

The CFIA is asking establishments to check to see if they have the recalled chicken on site.

โ€œRecalled products should be thrown out or returned to your supplier,โ€ the CFIA said in a statement.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the potential contamination so far. The agency says food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.ย

Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.ย

Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth, the CFIA said. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The CFIA is currently conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products, it says.

Erie Meat Products is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.ย

Chicken can sometimes be at the center of class action lawsuits. In December last year, a class action lawsuit accusing Subway of selling โ€œreal chickenโ€ sandwiches that contain only 50 percent chicken DNA was authorized by Quebecโ€™s Court of Appeal.
