Sephora Hair Care Olaplex Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Hair product manufacturer Olaplex is being sued by customers who claim one of its products contains a dangerous chemical, and Sephora Canada is being sued for selling it.
  • Why: The class action lawsuit alleges Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the serious health risks associated with the ingredient.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

An Olaplex hair care product sold at Sephora is at the center of a new class action lawsuit that alleges the company did not tell consumers it contains a “dangerous chemical.”

In the class action lawsuit filed against Sephora Canada and Olaplex Mar. 3 in the Superior Court of Quebec, consumers allege that Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector contains a chemical with serious health risks.

According to the Olaplex class action lawsuit, the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector, which was sold at Sephora, contains butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial).

Olaplex failed to inform its customers of the “serious health risks” associated with the ingredient, the class action lawsuit alleges. It states that side effects of exposure to lilial include allergies and potentially even infertility.

According to court documents, the company only admitted to being conscious of the risks linked to lilial on Feb. 28, 2022.

Sephora Kept Selling Olaplex Containing Lilial, Plaintiffs Allege

Olaplex says, since then, the chemical has been removed from the hair care product globally.

However, the lawsuit alleges Sephora Canada continues to sell Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing lilial.

The consumers are looking to represent anyone who purchased Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector containing Butylphenyl Methylpropional (lilial) in Canada.

They’re seeking punitive damages in the amount of $10 million and refunds for each consumer who bought the product for around $43 including tax per bottle.

Last year, a woman claimed that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair and even significant hair loss.

I was introduced to this product by my hairdresser! I’ve used it less than a year! I start noticing my hair falling a lot! I had to do some very expensive hair treatments to stop it, I’m so angry about this. I just found out about it 2 days ago.

  2. Kristen Grindstaff says:

My daughter just experienced this. It’s really bad. She has a complete, huge bald spot now since using and thinning is insane. I wish I could post a picture of it.

  3. Theresa Prestipino says:

I’ve been losing hair on top and back. I’ve been using it for a while.

  4. Corinna Smith says:

I have been using olaplex since it came out, And this is the product that I use the most. I’ve used it every day for years and I have proof of purchase from Sephora Canada for each time I bought it. This is very scary for women like me that have very thin hair already, and have experienced hair loss.

How do I join the lawsuit?

  5. Tania Hernandez says:

My hair and my moms hair has been falling out in chunks and we had no idea why. We started taking vitamins and biotin but to no avail. Just found out that it’s the olaplex that we have been using. I’ve lost over half my hair. I used to be able to make a thick pony tail, now it’s barely 1/3 thick of what it was before. They need to be sued and taken off all the shelves. There are other ladies going through the same thing if you go and read the reviews on Sephora. Fuck Jada Smith, Fuck Amber Heard, and Fuck Olaplex !

  6. Jil McDonald says:

Olaplex hair loss – very traumatizing.

OMG, as others have mentioned, I’m so glad I found this thread. I used 1/2-2/3 of the bottle of Olaplex shampoo over 2 months and have literally lost 1/2 my hair. It was coming out in handfuls in the shower. I was so scared to wash my hair, I’d start shaking when in the shower & only washed it once a week. I wouldn’t even comb or brush my hair as so much was coming out from the roots.

I couldn’t figure out what was wrong, healthy otherwise. I had also used it on my face, as the suds came down over my face I used it to wash my face. My face has been red, dry, inflamed all over since then. I was using the shampoo for 8-10 weeks or so (I had no idea a shampoo could do that to me!) Now, 3 months after stopping using the shampoo, the hair loss stopped. Now it’s been 4 months since stopping and hair has not grown back in. I’m trying biotin, iron and protein, but to no avail.

I’m still frightened to shampoo or brush my hair.
I purchased this in Canada at a online retailer.
Argh.. So sorry to hear I’m not alone, this is horrible.

  8. Kimberley Babcock says:

until i used said product my hair was normal and healthy . after using your product my scalp has sores and its painful sore irradiated

  9. Janelle Szumowski says:

Every since cutting out all Olaplex products I haven’t had hair loss, breakouts, intense hair growth and more. This is honestly absurd. The petuitary gland is sacred for us women. The fact this product would be left on and more is so concerning in my eyes.

  10. Tina says:

OMG, Olaplex line user and have had SIGNIFICANT hair thinning/loss!! I have spent $100’s on this product line . Now timeline of the start of use etc fits!! PLEASE add me to this law suit! This has damaged my self esteem etc. Horrible!!
