Ontario woman claims TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo causes hair loss.

An Ontario woman claims that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products lead to scalp irritation, blistering, swelling, dry hair, and even significant hair loss.

The woman filed a nationwide class action lawsuit hoping to represent all Canadian consumers who purchased TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products, including the brand’s Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Keratin Smooth Colour Shampoo. Lead plaintiff Morris claims that the products are defective and contain harmful ingredients that lead to scalp injuries and hair loss.

Morris claims that TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products were her “go-to” haircare purchases between 2018 and 2020. She says she bought the shampoo at a Walmart in Greater Sudbury on several occasions; however, in the summer of 2020, she says she began experiencing scalp irritation and hair damage and loss.

Morris points to social media posts of others complaining about the products as well as a class action lawsuit lodged in the US alleging TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo causes hair loss. She says she stopped using the product, but her hair hasn’t grown back. In addition, Morris claims that her hair is still brittle, dry, damaged, and thin and she often wears hats because she is embarrassed by her hair.

The class action lawsuit alleges that Unilever Canada and other defendants misrepresented the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products, failing to warn Morris and other consumers about the serious risks and negative side effects associated with some of the ingredients included in the shampoos. Specifically, Morris says that prolonged use of the Keratin shampoos can result in severe damage to users’ hair and scalp.

The products allegedly include hydrolyzed keratin protein, marula oil, and/or argan oil. Morris says that, according to TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo marketing, these ingredients were supposed to leave her with “soft and smooth hair.”

On the contrary, claims Morris, the ingredients in the TRESemmé products form formaldehyde, a well-known allergen and carcinogen, when they mix with water. Specifically, a preservative called DMDM hydantoin is known as a “formaldehyde donor” and is used in the product, alleges the class action.

The lawsuit alleges that Unilever and the other defendants have known about the danger of DMDM hydantoin for years. The class action lawsuit cites a $10.2 million class action settlement that concerned similar allegations against Suave over the ingredient in 2012. In addition, the plaintiff points to thousands of consumer complaints about the products.

Further, numerous safe alternatives exist, says the plaintiff. However, Unilever continues to use the dangerous ingredient and advertises the safety of its TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo products.

Hello, Iam from Canada and had hair loss and chemical burns from this companies shampoo and conditioner. I’ve tried some lawyers but it just seems like there too “scared” to go up against a big corporate company like this. I have medical documentations, photos and i still have the 2 products that caused the baldness and chemical burns, I had patches of bald spots off over my head, about 3-5 spots. This all happened in 2022 and since I cant find a lawyer that would take on the case Iam at a wall it seems. Since the incident and i stopped using the products about 1-2 months my hair started growing back in, to this days i still have dryness caused from it, iam constantly scratching the spots that were bald. I just WISH I could find SOMEONE that can help

How do I get in to this lawsuit? Used TRESemme for years and loved it, so I decided to buy this product in the red bottles (shampoo and conditioner) and in a short period of time, I was loosing clumps and handfuls of hair, even on my pillow every morning, plus parts broke off real short and my scalp was red and sore and irritated. I had very thick, long hair my whole life and since I used this product, I haven’t been able to get it to grow back any thicker or longer, and I lost at least 50% of my hair, so I am embarrassed to leave my home now because people literally knew me by my extremely long and thick hair. I have developed severe anxiety when I go out in public and have to take medicine now. This has literally flipped my life upside down and ruined my outlook on life because I’m so devistated and embarrassed. Please contact me, I have before and after pictures and pictures of clumps of hair, and the unused portions of product I had left, I’ve saved them in case there was a lawsuit because I’ve been a beautician for years and I knew it had to have happened to more than just me. Please contact me!! Thank you!!

OMG I have been using this product for years which probably explains my hair loss.

  5. Jael Reimer says:

I bought this product as I am a 21 year old student, and needed something affordable for my hair, and this one looked promising. I used this product for 6+ months and experienced SO MUCH hair loss when in the shower. I was so confused as to why this was happening, as I changed nothing in my hair care routine, so I didn’t expect it to be from the shampoo. Now my hair is so thin, I’m super self conscious of my hair part because it is so wide, and my hair feels overall lifeless. Recently I have been trying hard to fix this, and started researching the products I was using. Low and behold I found so many articles about this shampoo causing hair loss!!! I have since switched shampoos, but am really frustrated that this happened, as I used to have very nice, thicker hair. How can I be added to the lawsuit??
