General Motors Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Gas-Guzzling Engines

General Motors sells at least eight different vehicles fitted with an engine that is defective and burns through oil, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Michael Bell filed the new class action lawsuit against General Motors, alleging vehicles with its 2.4-litre Ecotec LAF and LEA engines suffer from oil consumption problems, CarComplaints.com reports

Bell says he owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox fitted with a 2.4-litre Ecotec LEA engine. However, in August 2017, he says the engine started to repeatedly stall.

He took it to be checked out, and says his car was diagnosed with engine failure. The class action lawsuit alleges the engines allow excessive engine oil to flow into the combustion chambers.

“This allegedly causes low levels of engine oil, low oil pressure, lack of engine lubricity, engine knock, spark plug fouling and knock, piston ring fouling, and major damage to other critical engine parts, including, but not limited to, timing chains,” the class action reportedly says.

The ultimate problem is defective piston rings, the claim alleges, which allows the excess oil flow and fouls spark plugs, creating carbon buildup in pistons and cylinders.

It says the vehicles fitted with the faulty engines burn amounts of oil that exceed industry standards. It says the rate can be as high as 0.946 litres of engine oil per 1,600 kilometres of driving.

Bell says the engines eventually wear out and overheat because they don’t have enough oil. The lack of lubricant eventually causes engine failure, which owners have to pay for.

The class action lawsuit also alleges Generation IV 5.3-litre V8 Vortec 5300 LC9 engines are defective.

The vehicles named in the class action are the 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Silverado, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Suburban, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2010-2013 GMC Sierra, 2010-2017 GMC Terrain, 2010-2014 GMC Yukon and the 2010-2014 GMC Yukon XL.

Meanwhile, faulty Takata airbag inflators in February prompted another recall of thousands of General Motors vehicles in Canada, including Cadillac Escalades, Chevy Silverados and GMC Yukons.

General Motors of Canada (GM Canada) is recalling more than 470,000 trucks and SUVs to replace the bad inflators on the Takata airbags, according to GM Authority.

I have a 2014 Equinox that is burning through oil and is getting worse. I would like to be added to the lawsuit.

  2. Sarah Hoffman says:

Please add me to the list! 2014 Terrain! Needs engine

  3. Heather H… says:

I have this exact issue with my Chevy equinox 2012 4 cylinder echo tech fwd!! Burns approx 1/2L / 500 highway km. Been doing this for few years- progressively worsening.

My vehicle is 4 months away from being paid on and with the cost of inflation in everything with a price tag on it.., we can’t afford to pay for a new engine and other parts /labour needed to fix it. A new loan is too expensive for a newer vehicle right now. My vehicle is required for my job but I’m afraid of wearing it out before I can afford to replace it!!

I’ve diligently stayed on top of all service needs (oil changes, tranny flushes, brakes/pads, rotars, tires..). Including no weekly oil check and top ups/km tracking past 2+ yrs.

    It’s progressively worsening!
This should not be happening! Plus GM failed to provide the recall notice in the mail to its customers and only provided to their service techs like 1-2 months before recall expired and techs told they could only tell customers with affected make/model of vehicle IF it had the oil issue observable or if vehicle showed possible related concerns WHILE people got car serviced! So if you weren’t needing service at the shop during that minimal time frame- you didn’t get information that could have actually helped the customers vehicle to maintain the vehicles longevity!!’

So now it’s our problem to buy a new engine and relative parts to correct this issue ! Or get a new vehicle.. that the majority of the population can’t afford during this excessive inflation period (global inflation!!)
    ???!

GM knew this was a huge issue! They knew it would eventually kill off the affected vehicles! They knew this was a costly mistake and a recall directly to consumers or service techs with at least 10-12 months before expiration so their customers could be informed and make an appointment to get it fixed !!’

So they pull shady shit and hide – leaving 1000’s of average folks scrambling or broke/in debt trying to keep their vehicle alive so we can get to work, run errands or care for kids!

    Not good GM!
I want to be included in this lawsuit! Have the documents to prove it!!

  4. Panorea Buttigieg says:

All dealers were notified through tsb bulletins about the oil consumption problem and were told to change new design valve covers and other parts but neglected to do so (bad dealers). I have the many tsb bulletins in my possession. I have a 2011 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 litre LC9 engine which has an oil problem as I said. As far as I am concerned this truck was unfit to be sold with the bad engine. There should have been a recall on this engine.

  5. Jenna says:

Hello I have a 2014 Chev Equinox that has already required an engine replacement due to this issue. How can I be added to this lawsuit?

  7. Ryan Todd says:

My 2010 5.3L Silverado is plauged with engine oil pressure issues and is burning oil. How do I get involved in this?

  8. Alvin Haukeness says:

I would like to register for this class action, I own a 2014 equinox with engine oil problems.

  9. D Chorney says:

What to be added to GM class action

    1. D.Chorney says:

      Note*
I own 2009 Chevy Silverado 5.3 vortex engine.
Vehicle always had an intermittent lifter noise, was reported several times under warranty and documented. Dealership says can’t hear it can’t fix it. Finally caused lifter collapse which over time caused cam lobe to be worn. All confirmed by GM mechanic. At 162000 klm a new GM create engine was installed at dealership PAID FOR BY ME! GM had TSB “technical safety bulletins” issued acknowledging oil consumption and oil in lifter issues.
GM has known about these faults, warned dealerships to look out for it. Even though I reported it to dealership GM has REFUSED to take any responsibility.

  10. Sharon Polehoykie says:

How do I get on the list? My 2014 Equinox started making ticking noises and the engine light came on shortly after. We checked the oil and the dipstick was bone dry. The mechanic said he couldn’t find a leak and that we should probably start looking for a new car. Cars should last longer than 7 years.
