General Motors Hit With Class Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Gas-Guzzling Engines

General Motors sells at least eight different vehicles fitted with an engine that is defective and burns through oil, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Michael Bell filed the new class action lawsuit against General Motors, alleging vehicles with its 2.4-litre Ecotec LAF and LEA engines suffer from oil consumption problems, CarComplaints.com reports

Bell says he owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox fitted with a 2.4-litre Ecotec LEA engine. However, in August 2017, he says the engine started to repeatedly stall.

He took it to be checked out, and says his car was diagnosed with engine failure. The class action lawsuit alleges the engines allow excessive engine oil to flow into the combustion chambers.

“This allegedly causes low levels of engine oil, low oil pressure, lack of engine lubricity, engine knock, spark plug fouling and knock, piston ring fouling, and major damage to other critical engine parts, including, but not limited to, timing chains,” the class action reportedly says.

The ultimate problem is defective piston rings, the claim alleges, which allows the excess oil flow and fouls spark plugs, creating carbon buildup in pistons and cylinders.

It says the vehicles fitted with the faulty engines burn amounts of oil that exceed industry standards. It says the rate can be as high as 0.946 litres of engine oil per 1,600 kilometres of driving.

Bell says the engines eventually wear out and overheat because they don’t have enough oil. The lack of lubricant eventually causes engine failure, which owners have to pay for.

The class action lawsuit also alleges Generation IV 5.3-litre V8 Vortec 5300 LC9 engines are defective.

The vehicles named in the class action are the 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Silverado, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Suburban, 2010-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2010-2013 GMC Sierra, 2010-2017 GMC Terrain, 2010-2014 GMC Yukon and the 2010-2014 GMC Yukon XL.

Meanwhile, faulty Takata airbag inflators in February prompted another recall of thousands of General Motors vehicles in Canada, including Cadillac Escalades, Chevy Silverados and GMC Yukons.

General Motors of Canada (GM Canada) is recalling more than 470,000 trucks and SUVs to replace the bad inflators on the Takata airbags, according to GM Authority.

How do you join a Class Action Lawsuit ? I have a 2012 Equinox that had to have the engine replaced due to no oil ( no warning )

    1. Sharon Polehoykie says:

      Did you get a response?

    2. Ruth Makila says:

I am having the exact same problem with my 2012 Equinox. There was a letter sent out by GM regarding of potential emissions part condition of a degraded catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensors. Check to see if you received a letter from General Motors of Canada regarding this excessive oil consumption. you can also check on the internet regarding the year of your Equinox. The US has already resolved the Class Action Lawsuit. I didn’t want to write all of the letter as it is lengthly.
Now the Dealership is having me check the oil every 1000km. I no longer feel safe driving my Equinox very far. The oil light never came on to warn me that there was no more oil .

What about all the governments across Canada and the fraudulent lockdowns, propaganda, and the death, injury, and economic collapse they have caused in the past 18 months? The consequences of this massive hoax are ten times worse than the Wuflu which had a recovery rate of 99+%. (At least until now when the Vaxx is causing more death and injury – because it’s not even a vaccine) This can all be proven by medical science and personal testimonies.

I own a 20213 Terrain with the same issues noted above-please add me to the list.

  5. Aaron R Murphy says:

I had a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox that died (engine failure) after just 171,000 kilometres. My father who owned the car had several service calls about the engine and in 2016 we had the motor rebuilt and about a year later, the motor seized which was not warrantied. Please add me to this lawsuit and tell me what documents I need to have a successful lawsuit.

  6. Tammy McNamara says:

  7. Peter says:

I had to replace the lifters on my 2010 5.3L silverado because of the low oil issue.

  10. Crandell Estabrooks says:

It’s typical of GM. I had a 2011 Equinox and it was doing the same thing. They said it was the timing chain, so I replaced the chain. they said if the mileage was under 189000, it was under a new warranty. Igave them my information, but they said the warranty ran out in 2018. I used to think that GM had nice workable vehicles but I didn’t realize that there are so many crooks in there now, its impossible to get a reliable vehicle from them
