A Newfoundland man says that 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-litre Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines.
Lead plaintiff, William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, reports Car Complaints. Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.
Kennedy says that he purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT Sport in 2018. He claims the vehicle had problems with excessive oil consumption within the first year of his purchase. Kennedy says that when he brought his vehicle in for repair, he was told that the PCV valve was the problem. The technicians allegedly fixed the valve and told the plaintiff to continue to monitor the oil levels.
Kennedy said that, despite the repair, his Ford F-105 still suffered from excessive oil consumption. He says the problem was so bad that a private mechanic performing an oil change discovered there was no oil on the dipstick at one point.
The class action lawsuit alleges that Ford has known of the engine defect in F-150 trucks that results in excessive oil consumption, but refuses to warn consumers. The defect can cause serious safety issues for drivers, including sudden stalling and even engine failure. Further, long-term low oil will eventually cause poor engine performance, says Kennedy.
The plaintiff says that he and other Ford F-150 owners would not have purchased or paid as much for the vehicle had they known of the defective engine. The class action lawsuit wants Ford to pay for repairs or replacements and compensate Class Members for the money they have already spent repairing the vehicle.

I have a 2020 xlt f150 with the Coyote engine that does use excessive oil between changes also.
We have four F150s that all have excessive oil consumption. The TSB 19-2365 has appeared to work on only one of the units.
bought a 2018 f150 with 5.0 and it smokes and smells burning oil when running.
I have a 2020 f150 with a V8 engine. I have my vehicle regularly serviced. It was noted that the engine was consuming large amounts of oil every oil change burning 5 litre per oil change
I had Ford perform an oil consumption test and it resulted in the engine being replaced in September 2024.
In December 2024 I noticed oil consumption again. Ford was notified and a second oil consumption test was initiated. The vehicle only had 10000 km on the new engine. I was notified by ford Canada that the new engine is only covered for 5000km. Go figure I haven’t gone through my first oil change yet. They replaced my defective engine with a new defective one. Doesn’t seem logical to me. They never addressed my initial problem with the engine
I have a F150 2019 5 L coyote with 100,000 km. I’m starting to realize I have a oil problem.
I own a 2020 Ford XLT, just came form service centre for oil change and was told no oil on dipstick , and he mentioned it is a common problem with the V8’s. My truck has less then 100K on it.
I own a 2020 Ford F150 with 5.0 V8 with low miles. This truck consumes excessive amount of motor oil.
2020 f150 sport 5.0l. Checked the oil the other day and it barely had any on the dip stick. I had to add a little over a liter of oil. Took it for an oil change and was told this is a common problem. Seems very odd that this is normal or okay for a truck of this year.
I have a 2018 f150 with the 5.0 has the same problem , didn’t realize it till I took it in had the oil change , no oil on the dipstick ….. shouldn’t use oil ….
I have a 2019 F150, same issues as everyone else I see. Count me in!
