Woman looking at hair loss in comb regarding Deva Concepts class action lawsuit accusing the companies DevaCurl products of causing hair loss and damage

Deva Concepts LLC is facing a class action lawsuit alleging its DevaCurl products cause hair loss.

According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, the company gained attention from consumers when it developed a formula in 2002 for a product called DevaCurl No-Poo Original.

The DevaCurl website said that “No-Poo” means that the product does not lather because, unlike most other shampoos on the market, it does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate.

“Years ago stylists discovered that sodium lauryl sulfate was super-harsh and that bubbles did not = clean,” the website’s FAQ page states.

“DevaCurl created a botanically-infused cleaner with a specific pH level that could cleanse the scalp without stripping follicles. The result was the world’s first conditioning cleanser or ‘No-Poo Original,” according to the DevaCurl FAQ.

The DevaCurl products named in the hair loss class action lawsuit include:

  • DevaCurl No-Poo Original non-lathering conditioning cleanser
  • DevaCurl One Condition Original hair conditioner
  • DevaCurl Light Defining Gel
  • DevaCurl Low-Poo Original cleanser
  • DevaCurl Low-Poo Delight cleanser
  • DevaCurl No-Poo Decadence cleanser
  • DevaCurl One Condition Delight hair conditioner
  • DevaCurl One Condition Decadence hair conditioner
  • Melt into Moisture Mask
  • Styling Cream
  • DevaCurl Leave-In Decadence conditioner
  • Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator
  • Wavemaker
  • DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel

According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, consumers pay a premium for DevaCurl products based on representations by DevaConcepts that the products are less harsh than other products available on the market.

“However, despite Deva Concepts’ promises, which have caused many curly haired consumers across Canada to purchase and use the DevaCurl Products, use of the Products cause scalp irritation, excessive shedding, hair loss, thinning, breakage and/or balding during normal use by consumers,” the DevaCurl class action lawsuit says.

To make matters worse, the DevaCurl class action lawsuit says Deva Concepts misleads consumers into believing that the shedding and hair loss caused by the products is normal and blames any excessive hair loss on factors unrelated to the use of DevaCurl products, such as stress, dandruff, weight loss, giving birth, scalp buildup and certain illnesses.

Woman looking at hair loss regarding the class action lawsuit filed against Deva Concepts claiming its DevaCurl products cause hair loss and irritationPlaintiff Sara Himmiche of Montreal says she experienced scalp irritation and hair loss after she purchased and used DevaCurl products. She claims the defendant made false and misleading representations about DevaCurl products and failed to disclose their defective nature.

In the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit, Sara claims damages for increased risk of hair loss and scalp irritation, anxiety and mental distress, unjust enrichment and restitution, and punitive damages. She also seeks a refund of the amount she paid to purchase the products.

Sara says she is not alone. According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, thousands of consumers have reported they experienced hair loss during use of or shortly after using DevaCurl products.

Angry customers have taken to social media to complain about DevaCurl hair loss, the Deva Concepts class action lawsuit says. One Facebook group that raises concern about DevaCurl scalp irritation and hair loss reportedly has nearly 50,000 members. On Instagram, a search for #RecallDevaCurl reveals hundreds of posts from consumers urging Deva Concepts to recall the product claims the complaint.

According to the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit, Deva Concepts has taken notice of these complaints and posted an update on its website on Feb. 11 to reassure customers that its products have been subjected to “rigorous testing that has confirmed they are safe and adhere to both quality assurance and regulatory standards.”

Deva Concepts has not issued a recall of the products and has not warned consumers about the risks of hair loss or other risks associated with the DevaCurl products, Sara says. The company has actually denied that its products cause any health issues, the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit says.

Sara says Deva Concepts breached its duty to manufacture and distribute products that were safe for consumers to use. She says the company failed to implement adequate quality control measures to ensure the products were free of defects.

Class Members of the proposed Deva Concepts hair loss lawsuit include anyone in Quebec who purchased or used one or more Deva Concepts or DevaCurl products for sale in Canada. Sara says that she, along with members of the proposed Class, have experienced prolonged anxiety and mental distress from the DevaCurl scalp irritation and hair loss.

  1. Concerned Mom says:

My daughter has always had thick sparkly curly hair. Last year she started using Deva Curl and invested a lot of money in the products. 3 months into using this she started noticing hair loss. And I don’t mean little bits of hair, I’m taking clumps of hair. Major clumps. When I saw this I became concerned and took her to the doctor who ran blood work which came back normal with no deficiencies or illness indication. I then took her to a dermatologist who indicated she also didn’t see anything alarming with her health. My daughter reached out to Deva Curl who claimed their products were fine and could she send the products back for testing. We kept them as we decided we will reach out for some help because if you saw the amount of hair she has lost you would think she just had chemo! It’s horrific and has me her parents very ill. My daughter is so very depressed because now her hair is super thin and short. Never have I seen anything like this! Deva Curl should be ashamed for the stress they have caused and for being so dishonest. I recently connected with a woman who Is a hair care specialist who informed me that there is something that Deva Curl uses in their products that is for straight hair and if used on curly hair will fall out. Please, do your best to help all these women who have used this product because this is not okay and the damage is not even fixable at this point. If you saw photos before and after you would be beside yourself. Thanks for your time in reading this.

I’ve had very thick & lustrous hair all my life. Always got compliments & comments about it from people & hairdressers. About 18-24 months ago I noticed my scalp being itchy & my hair getting thinner, dry, falling out. It’s awful! Thought it was due to aging. I started using DEVAcurl@4 years ago. After reading & hearing about others’ problems & experiences, I can’t help but think I’ve been effected by these products

  3. Kelle says:

It’s been awful. I’ve used DC Products for several years. At first I thought my hair loss and thinning was due to stress. So I am at up use of the product line to hold the curl better etc. The back of my head with it so bad that it was red and irritated and before you know it I was almost completely bald in the back of my head. I lost a great deal of my hair around my temples and it was breaking off in hand falls. I was told it was my hormones, well of course it was they were poisoning me and I didn’t even know it until about four weeks ago when I stopped using the products all together. I have hundreds of dollars worth of products sitting in my shower I’m hoping to return them for a refund after the lockdown is over. I also noticed some breakouts on my temple area, and as a woman of a certain age I never had breakouts even when I was a teenager so to see them at this age was surprising. I have been growing my hair out for almost a year because I was thinking maybe the coloring I was doing was damaging it. But I can see now that after a few weeks of not using these products my skin has cleared up and my hair is getting a little better although I feel like now my follicles are probably clogged, and I am pretty sure that I need to do a liver detox. I have no idea the carcinogenic nature of this product nor the amount of breakage and fall out That has affected my mental state and my business, because it’s been such a drastic difference.

Wow just wow I’ve been using most of theses these products if not all for years and started to use it on my daughter the last 2 years and i noticed my hair starting to thin and dry crunchy and i have been noticing that my daughter hair is now staring to thin and dry I just found out about this today 4/30/20 and im vary upset im stoping the use of these products immediately…

  5. Melissa J Cutway says:

I started noticing extreme hair loss in the shower and in my brush after about 2 years of using DevaCurl products. I had been through some personal losses and as a result I fell out of a healthy lifestyle and thought my issues could be related to that, but as I improved my health in all aspects (mental, physical, emotional), my hair continued to thin and dry out. I started seeing baby hairs for the first time in my life – the breakage was awful (and I do not use heat!) The amount of scalp that shows through my dark brown hair at my part and whenever I lift parts of my hair is horrible. My curls changed to waves, I lost the volume I used to have at the root, and finally one of my friends asked me what products I was using. She pointed me to countless reviews from others saying that they were experiencing the same issues – all attributed it to DevaCurl.

As many others have said, those of us with thick heads of curls are often known for our hair. It is part of our identity. The changes I have seen to my hair have caused me so much anxiety and depression. I no longer feel like myself. Recently someone referred to me as the one with the ‘wavy hair’ and it crushed me – when did I stop being the girl with the crazy curls? How have I lost such a huge part of who I am?

DevaCurl should be ashamed of themselves; these products need to be removed from the market immediately. I feel so incredibly protective of my curly girls and want to warn everyone I can to stop using these products immediately. DevaCurl has left me devastated. I now take supplements and use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner in a desperate attempt to recover what I have lost. Who knows if I ever will?

I live in New york and I used Deva curls for about a year after I accomplished to have my hair at its best I wanted my curls to be well protected with a reliable/ honest product and when I found out about Deva curls I started using it. I stared to experience extreme hair loss and also my curls started to die, my hair line became thin and every time I showered I would just see tons of hair left in the shower and also in my brush. also my scalp was extremely itchy to a point I though I might had lice. I was very confused about it and started to care for my hair at home avoiding my hair salon and other products. in my head I never even imagined it was Diva curls. until a very good friend of mine and I had a date and she asked me if I was using Deva curls because it was very noticeable the change in my hair, she was wearing a hat and then proceeded to show me her hair and told me about her research. i stopped using the products immediately ever since and now I am trying to get my hair back.

  7. Cassandra Winchell says:

I used deva curl for approximately 9 months in 2019 (Feburary-October/November). Shortly after using deva curl I realized my scalp being extremely itchy, I spoke with multiple hair dressers and they had no clue what could be causing it, said my scalp could possibly be dry but that it didn’t look dry. Never thought it could be the deva curl because there are so many people who were saying such great things about their products. Over those 9 months I would grab handfuls of my hair from the shower drain after showering, and my curls are straighter than they have EVER been. I am a waitress and the itching got so bad I’d be in pain at tables just ready to run to the bathroom to scratch my head. Still today 3 ish months after not using it my scalp is soooo itchy, painful itchy. I’ve cried to my partner multiple times idk what to do, I need some kind of relief. I recently started following some of the curly hair influencers like Indie Batson and Ayesha Malik on youtube and saw there deva curl videos about how it has ruined their hair as well and started doing some research. This makes so much since, my hair dresser will tell you 2 years ago nothing like this was a problem for me, I started using deva curl and little did I kbow that was the start to this horrendous situation.

  8. Maya Moody says:

I have also experienced issues with Devacurl products. Over time the products cause naturally curly hair to straighten irreversibly which is the exact opposite of what is supposed to happen. The worst part is I used this on my 4 year old son and had to sit cut his curls off because of all the random straight pieces that were coming up for a kid who has had really curly and healthy hair since he was a baby. It looked terrible. We are all healthy and are not on any medications. I spent 100s of dollars on these products over the years not realizing it was the products causing our really curly hair to flatten out. It’s really sad and I’m sad that I put my kid through this.

  9. Wendy Garcia says:

this is BS….please add me. I thought my hair loss might be from some of my medications

  10. Beth Heller says:

I started using deva curl a few years ago when my conditioner switched formulas. I have noticed that my beautiful thick head of blond curly hair has been thinning rapidly. I didn’t realize until I read this that it could potentially be from this conditioner.
