Woman looking at hair loss in comb regarding Deva Concepts class action lawsuit accusing the companies DevaCurl products of causing hair loss and damage

Deva Concepts LLC is facing a class action lawsuit alleging its DevaCurl products cause hair loss.

According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, the company gained attention from consumers when it developed a formula in 2002 for a product called DevaCurl No-Poo Original.

The DevaCurl website said that “No-Poo” means that the product does not lather because, unlike most other shampoos on the market, it does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate.

“Years ago stylists discovered that sodium lauryl sulfate was super-harsh and that bubbles did not = clean,” the website’s FAQ page states.

“DevaCurl created a botanically-infused cleaner with a specific pH level that could cleanse the scalp without stripping follicles. The result was the world’s first conditioning cleanser or ‘No-Poo Original,” according to the DevaCurl FAQ.

The DevaCurl products named in the hair loss class action lawsuit include:

  • DevaCurl No-Poo Original non-lathering conditioning cleanser
  • DevaCurl One Condition Original hair conditioner
  • DevaCurl Light Defining Gel
  • DevaCurl Low-Poo Original cleanser
  • DevaCurl Low-Poo Delight cleanser
  • DevaCurl No-Poo Decadence cleanser
  • DevaCurl One Condition Delight hair conditioner
  • DevaCurl One Condition Decadence hair conditioner
  • Melt into Moisture Mask
  • Styling Cream
  • DevaCurl Leave-In Decadence conditioner
  • Super Stretch Coconut Curl Elongator
  • Wavemaker
  • DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel

According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, consumers pay a premium for DevaCurl products based on representations by DevaConcepts that the products are less harsh than other products available on the market.

“However, despite Deva Concepts’ promises, which have caused many curly haired consumers across Canada to purchase and use the DevaCurl Products, use of the Products cause scalp irritation, excessive shedding, hair loss, thinning, breakage and/or balding during normal use by consumers,” the DevaCurl class action lawsuit says.

To make matters worse, the DevaCurl class action lawsuit says Deva Concepts misleads consumers into believing that the shedding and hair loss caused by the products is normal and blames any excessive hair loss on factors unrelated to the use of DevaCurl products, such as stress, dandruff, weight loss, giving birth, scalp buildup and certain illnesses.

Woman looking at hair loss regarding the class action lawsuit filed against Deva Concepts claiming its DevaCurl products cause hair loss and irritationPlaintiff Sara Himmiche of Montreal says she experienced scalp irritation and hair loss after she purchased and used DevaCurl products. She claims the defendant made false and misleading representations about DevaCurl products and failed to disclose their defective nature.

In the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit, Sara claims damages for increased risk of hair loss and scalp irritation, anxiety and mental distress, unjust enrichment and restitution, and punitive damages. She also seeks a refund of the amount she paid to purchase the products.

Sara says she is not alone. According to the DevaCurl class action lawsuit, thousands of consumers have reported they experienced hair loss during use of or shortly after using DevaCurl products.

Angry customers have taken to social media to complain about DevaCurl hair loss, the Deva Concepts class action lawsuit says. One Facebook group that raises concern about DevaCurl scalp irritation and hair loss reportedly has nearly 50,000 members. On Instagram, a search for #RecallDevaCurl reveals hundreds of posts from consumers urging Deva Concepts to recall the product claims the complaint.

According to the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit, Deva Concepts has taken notice of these complaints and posted an update on its website on Feb. 11 to reassure customers that its products have been subjected to “rigorous testing that has confirmed they are safe and adhere to both quality assurance and regulatory standards.”

Deva Concepts has not issued a recall of the products and has not warned consumers about the risks of hair loss or other risks associated with the DevaCurl products, Sara says. The company has actually denied that its products cause any health issues, the DevaCurl hair loss class action lawsuit says.

Sara says Deva Concepts breached its duty to manufacture and distribute products that were safe for consumers to use. She says the company failed to implement adequate quality control measures to ensure the products were free of defects.

Class Members of the proposed Deva Concepts hair loss lawsuit include anyone in Quebec who purchased or used one or more Deva Concepts or DevaCurl products for sale in Canada. Sara says that she, along with members of the proposed Class, have experienced prolonged anxiety and mental distress from the DevaCurl scalp irritation and hair loss.

Oh wow! Why am I just now hearing about this?! I have been using No-Poo and Low Poo Delight and One Condition for several years. I also have a handful of hair to clean out of the tub after every shower! I thought it was my age!! BUT I have also noticed when I shower in our RV where I have a different brand of curl care shampoo and conditioner, there is no hair on the shower floor. So…..I guess its not my age! Pulling the costly Deva products out now!

I’ve been using Deva no poo shampoo, One Condition and strong hold gel for over a decade. My hair is thinning and falling out. I went to the dermatologist and she said my scalp was irritated and inflamed. She put me on two Rx medications and suggested minoxidil 5%. While my irritated scalp is better, the hair loss continues, Hats and wigs are in my future. ?

I am a DevaCurl user. The No Poo shampoo and conditioner, the light gel and the curling cream. I’ve been using the products for about 4 months now. I am currently going through perimenopause and thought the increase in hair loss was attributed to hormonal changes. However recently my scalp has started itching… and I don’t mean occasionally, but like a bad case of lice itching (NO I DO NOT HAVE LICE). My scalp is sensitive and hurts. I have stopped using the DC line and hopefully since I have not been using it as long as some, I can reverse any damage that was done. I do not have receipts for the products as we travel for work and must practice being a minimalist. I am hoping just stopping use will help.

I’ve also noticed great hair loss each time I use the shampoo & conditioner. My wide tooth comb is always full of a wad of hair after coming out. I’m now researching for another curly hair line to use now that I know this is the cause. I’d be interested in restitution as well! I’ve paid premium money buying these products at cvs for years and most recently Amazon.

I have used Deva Curl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler for several years- When I tried to re-order, I found out that the product had been taken off the market, reformulated and with a different name, put back on the market. I had noticed a lot of hair loss and sores on my scalp but didn’t attribute either to the Deva curl…until I stopped using it. It’s only been a month or so, but I have noticed almost no hair loss and my scalp has cleared.

  5. Kyra says:

I used deva curl for about two years now. It’s made my natural curls super straight and frizzy, my length is breaking off and I noticed it’s gotten thinner too !

  6. Emily Gasparek says:

This is crazy. I found the moisture leave in conditioner at TJ Maxx and was so excited because I could never afford Devacurl. Low and behold a few months later I am losing clumps of hair in the shower and am seeing bald spots. I have very thick curly hair so this is CRAZY.

  7. Cathy La Furge says:

I noticed that after using the full line of products, cleanser, conditioner, styling gel and leave in conditioner foam that my hair was falling out. I stopped using the products for 6 months and tried again, same issue with hair loss and with scalp sores.
I have at least 6 products in my bathroom and will put to the side as proof and hope that my experience helps with the class action. I purchased my items from my salon and Sephora.

  8. Aliyah Kennedy says:

I had been using the DevaCurl Light Defining Gel and DevaCurl One Condition Delight hair conditioner. I loved the light defining gel and the conditioner was decent as well. I am not one to point blame at a product for my issues so I was just confused as to why I was losing hair way more than the normal amount and why I had developed such an itchy scalp and dandruff, something I have never ever had issues with at all. Another issue I have had since using DevaCurl is despite all the moisture I try putting into my hair, it seems to just dry out and break out so easily. I didn’t even know there was a lawsuit until I was talking with my mom about the gel and was dumbfounded in realization. I am just frustrated that now I have issues with my scalp that hopefully I can remedy and sad since I always have such thin and fine hair. Monetary compensation will only help me so much and all the women out there effected by DevaCurl’s damaging products.

I initially was looking for a nice mask for my curly hair found the “melt into moisture “ and at first it was great , but months went down the road (using as directed ) and I noticed my hair was getting extremely dry and rough , my curl pattern had disappeared! naturally I thought to do another mask and that it was the winter weather causing the dryness shortly after my scalp had became very itchy and hair was thinning out to where The front right section of my hair I could now see my scalp . I freaked out after seeing how much hair was in my brush after my shower I instantly threw the melt into moisture product away . I had decided to try and recover my hair with using no heat and air drying my curls no coloring just doing my best to recover my hair months go by and I went in for a hair cut as my hair was very damaged from the melt into moisture deva curl product and I needed a good 6 inches cut off from my hair hoping it might help as I still could hardly brush though my hair because of how dry it was , after my hair cut it did feel better and I could now start to manage to brush my hair again but still with lots of pain . My scalp and hair thinning never fully recovered resulting in extremely oily scalp that itches even into my current day and my hairs curl pattern has never fully came back . The products were advertised for my type of hair ! For curly hair ! And I come to find out they knew these things were happening to their customers !? And they still advertised it ! I spent about a year in distraught as my hair was always my best attribute and now it had been ripped away from me my hair was so frizzy and dry along with the hair loss and painful scalp .
