Peter Nygard Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Peter Nygard has had his bail request rejected by the Supreme Court of Canada.
  • What: Nygard is facing extradition to the U.S. to face sex trafficking charges.
  • Where: Nygard is currently incarcerated in Canada, awaiting trial for extradition to the U.S.

Fashion mogul Peter Nygard was denied bail by Canada’s highest court ahead of the trial on his extradition to the U.S. where he faces nine charges related to alleged sex trafficking in New York.

The 80-year-old businessman was arrested last year in Canada under the Extradition Act after authorities in the U.S. accused him of using his power in the fashion industry to lure and manipulate young women into sex trafficking in exchange for modelling and financial opportunities, North Shore News reports.

Nygard is expected to face charges in the U.S. in a criminal trial related to seven women who allege their livelihoods and movements became dependent on having sex with Nygard.

The women all claim they were coerced by Nygard through financial means or physical force.

Nygard’s defence lawyer Brian Greenspan told North Shore News that Nygard was looking forward to addressing the allegations against him.

“He denies the veracity of the claims against him and the only place that is ever going to be determined is in a trial in the United States,” he told North Shore News.

Nygard has previously had bail denied in February and was denied again despite his lawyers presenting a release plan that included monitoring of all emails and text messages. It also involved an in-home security guard and 24-hour video surveillance.

Justice Jennifer Pfuetzner of the Manitoba Court of Appeal said given the enormity of the allegations and necessary faith in the justice system, she could not grant Nygard bail.

She said the allegations “paint a picture of criminal conduct that was planned, financed and executed on a staggering scale.”

Nygard is also the subject of a class action lawsuit in the U.S. involving 57 women with similar allegations. None of the women who are accusing Nygard are named in the complaint, which is nearly 100 pages long. Seven of the 10 plaintiffs say they were under the age of 18 when they were victimized by Nygard, and three claim they were only 14 years old at the time. Two of the plaintiffs were employees of Nygard and they allege that he raped them.

The sexual assault class action lawsuit says Nygard engaged in sex trafficking at a compound he built in the Bahamas in the 1980s, which was called Nygard Cay. Some women were reportedly held at Nygard Cay and claimed they were unable to leave without Nygard’s permission. In some cases, victims reported that their passports would be confiscated until they had sex with Nygard.

Additionally, the victims claim they were forced “through a combination of fraud, coercion, psychological force and manipulation, and physical force” to perform sexual acts, according to the sex trafficking class action lawsuit.
