Depo-Provera Bone Loss Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Canada residents who received four Depo-Provera injections between April 1997 and June 2006 and suffered bone density loss before May 31, 2010.
  • Why: Pfizer allegedly failed to disclose certain risks associated with the birth-control drug.
  • Where: Canada.

Consumers who received injections of the birth-control drug Depo-Provera and suffered declines in bone density may be eligible to take part in a $2.2 million class action lawsuit settlement.

Claims forms will be due by March 1, 2022; however, the claims period has not yet opened.

Class Members may subscribe on the settlement website to receive an email notification when the claim form becomes available.

The Class consists of anyone living in Canada who took Depo-Provera before May 31, 2010, claims to have suffered a loss of bone mineral density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) before that date, and was living in Canada at the time they took the drug.

To be eligible for compensation, the Class Member must have taken four consecutive, uninterrupted injections of Depo-Provera at least three months apart. The first injection must have taken place after April 2, 1997, and the last injection must have taken place before June 30, 2006.

Class Members must have been diagnosed with bone mineral density loss before May 31, 2010, and within 30 months of the last use of Depo-Provera. They also must not suffer from certain risk factors.

The settlement resolves three lawsuits that had accused Depo-Provera maker Pfizer of misrepresenting the drug’s potential risks, such as the potential for an irreversible decline in bone mineral density.

Class Members will receive a pro rata share of the value of all valid claims as calculated by the settlement administrator.

An approval hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 26, 2021.

I was prescribed the depo shot as a late teen, for a number of years. My doctor pulled me off when it came to light that there was a bone density issue. I had a bone density scan and was diagnosed with Osteopenia. Now at 37, I fractured a rib 6 months ago with a home workout. My new doctor has requested an additional bone density scan (tomorrow), as this is concerning to her.

I also took this drug in 2000 I was 19, I was told by the nurse that this was the most effective bc and wasn’t told of any risk to bones. My period has never come back. Almost 23 years now, I was told I suffer PCOS at age 25 years old. I have severe bone density loss and osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, many injuries have occurred because my bones aren’t strong. The mental depression and stress related to not having proper hormones levels and no period. I was just a kid and trusted the medical professionals now I’m 42 and I have been seriously effected due to the effects of this drug. I didn’t know or hv the means for legal action. Please, I would like help with this.

I had been on Depo-Provera from 1992 until 2008, and now have had a spinal fusion and rt total hip replacement, will need the lt hip in near future. I am also having bilateral shoulder pain. My family Doc mentioned that depo can deplete your bones of calcium. Suddenly it dawned on me that all my issues may be related to this drug I used for years. What’s the next step I take with this issue?

I started depo shots right when i gave birth to my twins at 18 years old. I took it for 10 years and Thru the courts of my life. As i got older my bones were not great . I went and got a bone density done and it proved my bones never matured and due to those shots i was losing bone mass. Not once was i told this nor did anyone take me off of that birth control. I also went thru menopause at the age of 33 full blow by 35 and when i tell you having to raise a 9 year old with these symptoms is not good. I went for a second bone test and it show it not getting better so now I’m trying to keep bone mass at lease as is as i was diagnosed with osteopenia and if my bones get worse will have osteoporosis. All of this could of been avoided if the doctors and drug company’s did what was best for us. Now years later I’m seeing all these stories and realize I’m not alone . I suffer all the time .

  7. Lynn M Cummings says:

Hi my name is Lynn, I used depo provera from 1997 up till my last pregnancy in 2015. From that time I was unaware of the black box warming. Seince then my teeth were in perfect health I have lost nearly all of my teeth due to this drug. I’m only 42 and dealing with this I’m not old enough to receive state insurance. I have delt with infections from my teeth, I don’t make enough to cover the cost of dental work. All 32 of my teeth are broken I can’t eat most of the time due to the pain that I have. What was free and given to me through the heath department now is going to cost me over 10k to fix the damage that depo provera has done. I lost my smile and I’m tired of being accused of doing drugs like meth or crack I just want my smile back. I can’t get a job cause the frist thing they see is my broken and missing teeth. I don’t know what else to do, or turn too.

    1. Julie Wyatt says:

My story is exactly like yours plus I got osteopenia from the depo. I’m also 42 and was on the shot 10 years (2005-2015)

  8. Tabitha Jean Pickett says:

    1. Charity Renfroe says:

Who can we contact about compensation because has destroyed my life and tgis people need to be held accountable for this. I lost all my teeth in the front and I arthritis. Bone loss density, TMJ disorder and a ton of other health problems I never had until getting in this poison called Depo Provera. Someone please help me!!!

  9. Tayler says:

I was put on the depo provera shot when I was 19 and after a year being on it, I came off. my period still did not come back for a year, and i had to be put back on hormones to regulate it. While my cycle was messed up, I began to develop a ton of seemingly random symptoms that were different everyday, ad individually seemed inconsequential. Here I am 5 years later, those same symptoms are beginning to add up to a Pituitary Brian Tumor which cause a rare disease called Cushings. I have no true proof, but I know I wouldn’t be here today if I had never taken this horrific drug. An inexperienced nurse convinced me this was the best BC option – “virtually no side effects” is what I was told. I know in my heart of hearts that the Depo Provera ruined my life and I’ve had to fight everyday for 5+ years to get doctors to listen to me and see that I’m not crazy because some jackass wanted to lie to the public and earn more money than they’re worth by pushing a dangerous drug on unsuspecting young women. I AM ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 years of my life have been lost and women need to be protected from this.
