Depo-Provera Bone Loss Class Action Overview:

  • Who: Canada residents who received four Depo-Provera injections between April 1997 and June 2006 and suffered bone density loss before May 31, 2010.
  • Why: Pfizer allegedly failed to disclose certain risks associated with the birth-control drug.
  • Where: Canada.

Consumers who received injections of the birth-control drug Depo-Provera and suffered declines in bone density may be eligible to take part in a $2.2 million class action lawsuit settlement.

Claims forms will be due by March 1, 2022; however, the claims period has not yet opened.

Class Members may subscribe on the settlement website to receive an email notification when the claim form becomes available.

The Class consists of anyone living in Canada who took Depo-Provera before May 31, 2010, claims to have suffered a loss of bone mineral density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) before that date, and was living in Canada at the time they took the drug.

To be eligible for compensation, the Class Member must have taken four consecutive, uninterrupted injections of Depo-Provera at least three months apart. The first injection must have taken place after April 2, 1997, and the last injection must have taken place before June 30, 2006.

Class Members must have been diagnosed with bone mineral density loss before May 31, 2010, and within 30 months of the last use of Depo-Provera. They also must not suffer from certain risk factors.

The settlement resolves three lawsuits that had accused Depo-Provera maker Pfizer of misrepresenting the drug’s potential risks, such as the potential for an irreversible decline in bone mineral density.

Class Members will receive a pro rata share of the value of all valid claims as calculated by the settlement administrator.

An approval hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 26, 2021.

  1. Chelsea Petsche says:

I was on the DEPO shot from 2013-2020 with no breaks and have experienced major bone density loss. I had tests done in 2021 to prove the loss in density. I had a hip replacement in 2015 and it was removed in 2021. I’m awaiting my third surgery on this hip and have had major issues with osteoarthritis for years, all since 2013 when I started DEPO.

I know my issues began after 2010 but would I still be eligible considering the scale of my issues?

  2. Opal Roszell says:

I haven’t had my period since 2013, I only took the shot a few times periodically. But my entire menstruation is gone completely. Doctor has not figured out why.

  3. Opal Roszell says:

I haven’t been able to have children ever since my first son. After the use of this drug. My doctor never sent me for tests. But I have chronic bone pains, and weakness. I have lost so much strength. Taken in 2004-2013

  4. Renee Pare says:

I was on it from 2002 until 2010 with 2 break periods in order to have my children (born in 2007 and 2011). I was unaware of the testing or I would have had it done. I’m only 38 and had to have my teeth removed as they were weak and falling out of my mouth no matter how many dentist appointments I made. I hope everyone who was made aware gets what they deserve from these people who effected our lives with unsafe treatments

  5. Danielle Boutilier says:

I’ve been on it for 5 yrs and was on it prior. I heard later about bone density loss, my Dr has never sent me for a test. Drs should be aware of class action lawsuits to let patients know how bad something is. Come January I will be coming off as I recently had my shot. Reading side affects I do have some that have been noticeable and hoping it changes when I’m off. I already have 2 kids so don’t want any more. I worked construction and is one reason why I wanted it. Wish I would’ve been advised of all of this and hopefully I come off with no issues. When I was on it prior I had no issues coming off of it however I’ve been on it now much longer then before.

      1. Tierra Stevenson says:

Migraines are a big one I feel. I’ve had to take injections because nothing would remedy them while I was on depo. They aren’t better being off but they have eased up on intensity. But I agree they need to know so they can pass it on and if they know. Is it malpractice?

  7. Christine chapman says:

I was on depo from June 2007 and until Nov. 2020
