Certain Proctor Silex Pantone oven mitts are being recalled because of reports that they may melt or even ignite during regular use, potentially causing injuries.
Health Canada says that there have been three reports of the oven mitts catching fire or melting in the country in its recall notice posted Wednesday.
“Oven mitt may melt or catch on fire when in contact with high heat, posing a burn and fire hazard,” states the recall notice.
The agency says consumers should stop using the oven mitts and contact the distributor for a refund.
More than 12,500 recalled oven mitts were sold at Giant Tiger stores in Canada between August of 2020 and March of 2021. The mitts come in grey (charcoal grey), red (pomegranate), navy, and taupe. They were sold in a pair and have a stitched, diamond pattern. They also have one of the following UPC numbers: 65589742581, 65589742598, 65589742604, or 65589744905.
The recalled oven mitts were made in China and distributed by Giant Tiger, which runs 260 locations across Canada. As of April 8, the company has reported no injuries related to the oven mitt.
Consumers who want more information may contact customer service at Giant Tiger at 1-833-848-4437 or via email at support@gianttiger.freshdesk.com, notes the Health Canada website.
Health Canada warns consumers on its website that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold, or even given away in Canada and asks consumers to notify the agency of any health or safety incidents related to this or any other product.
Top Class Actions will monitor this and other product recalls in the interest of consumer safety.
