Ikea Canada Data Breach Data Privacy Overview:

  • Who: Ikea Canada has suffered a data breach impacting the personal information of nearly 100,000 Canadian customers.
  • Why: Customers report receiving emails from Ikea informing them that their privacy may have been breached.
  • Where: The data breach affects customers in Canada.

A recent Ikea Canada internal data breach has exposed the personal information of tens of thousands of Canadian Ikea customers, the company has confirmed.

Customers have reported receiving emails from Ikea to advise them of a data breach, Insurance Business Mag reports.

Ikea Canada has since confirmed those reports to journalists, saying it appeared to be an internal hack affecting about 95,000 customers’ information.

According to the furniture giant, it was made aware that many of its customers’ personal information appeared in a generic internet search made by an employee between March 1-3.

Ikea Canada Data Breach Occurred When Someone Accessed Customer Database, Company Says

The company said the information was accessed by the person using Ikea Canada’s customer database.

“While we can’t speculate as to why the search was made, we can share that we have taken actions to remedy this situation,” Ikea Canada PR Leader Kristin Newbigging told Global News. “We have also reviewed our internal processes and reminded our co-workers of their obligation to protect customer information.”

The company has not yet issued a public statement on the breach on its website or social media channels.

Meanwhile, Ikea Canada said officials within the company acted quickly to prevent the data from being used, stored or shared with any third parties.

It also said no financial or banking information was accessed in the breach. Ikea Canada has submitted a breach report to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

The office said it was in touch with the company to discuss next steps, although those next steps were not immediately made available. It added that, during the 2020-21 fiscal year, the office received 782 breach reports, affecting at least 9 million Canadian accounts.

Ikea Canada Customer Move to Protect Data

Meanwhile, customers told Global News they were moving to protect their data. One customer reported putting a fraud block on his credit report, and he urged others to do the same.

A flurry of cyber attacks over the last year have led to a number of data breach class action lawsuits lobbied against businesses and led to several substantial settlement agreements.

Consumers taking aim at businesses have made claims from negligence in protecting their data and privacy to failing to implement the proper safeguards to effectively do so, among other things. Meanwhile, in June last year, Ikea Canada agreed to pay a settlement to end claims that certain chest of drawers models did not meet North American ASTM standards on free-standing stability.
