Desjardins Data Breach Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Current and former Desjardins members or customers or customers with credit cards or other Desjardins financial products may be eligible for compensation from a class action settlement.
  • Why: The proposed Desjardins settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit filed in response to a massive June 2019 data breach.
  • Where: The Desjardins class action settlement is pending in the Superior Court of Québec.

Earlier this month, Mouvement Desjardins announced that it had agreed to pay $200 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed in response to a massive June 2019 data breach.

A Superior Court judge must approve the Desjardins class action settlement for it to take effect.

If approved, the data breach settlement would offer compensation to current and former Desjardins members and customers or customers who have had credit cards or other Desjardins financial products.

Desjardins Data Breach Affected Nearly 3M Customers

A Desjardins employee was reportedly suspected of stealing the personal information of 2.9 million customers. He was fired after Desjardins learned of the theft.

Information that was allegedly compromised in the Desjardins data breach include names, birthdates, social insurance numbers, phone numbers and addresses.

The former employee was allegedly in contact with individuals involved in street gangs, foreign crime syndicates and other criminal groups. He may have used the “dark web” to connect with criminals who wished to purchase the information.

Desjardins says it found out about the data breach on June 14, 2019, when it was contacted by Laval police. In response, Desjardins says it has taken new security measures to protect customers’ personal information and assets.

“I’d like to reassure our members and clients: their accounts and assets with Desjardins are protected in the event of fraud,” chief executive officer Guy Cormier said. “If they suffer a financial loss as a result of this situation, they will get their money back. We regret this situation and are making every effort to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.”

Desjardins offered a year of free credit monitoring and identity theft insurance to those affected by the data breach.

Yes, they send me a notification letter informing me of this breach. I rarely buy anything online because my privacy is very important to me, I thought this credit card would have been a safe option which is why I opened the account.

I was indeed affected by this, they have given my 5 years of protection. Had to change everything. Hope it is enough.
