Roundup Weed Killer Cancer Risks: Who’s Affected?

Are you a Canadian citizen who has developed cancer after using Roundup weed killer?

If yes, you may be eligible to join a free Roundup cancer class action lawsuit investigation.

On June 24, 2020, Bayer announced that it would pay an over $10 billion settlement in efforts to resolve the thousands of lawsuits filed over its Roundup weedkiller, which plaintiffs are claiming has caused users to develop cancer.

The weed killer has an active ingredient called glyphosate, a widely used herbicide and probable human carcinogen.

Use of the chemical over a long period of time may lead to the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or other types of glyphosate cancer. Monsanto, which is now owned by Bayer, denies that Roundup causes cancer. However, the companies are facing a large number of lawsuits in the United States and elsewhere by individuals who claim they developed cancer due to glyphosate exposure.

Thousands of Roundup lawsuits have already been filed in the United States, with some plaintiffs being awarded substantial compensation. Canadian lawyers are currently looking for potential plaintiffs who have developed cancer after using Roundup over a long period of time.

If you or a loved one are a Canadian citizen who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or another type of cancer after using Roundup products, you may have a legal claim against Monsanto, its manufacturer, and Bayer, its parent company.

What is Roundup?

Roundup is a popular weed killer developed by Monsanto and bought by the pharmaceutical company Bayer in 2018 for $63 billion.

One of Roundup’s ingredients includes glyphosate in the form of isopropylamine salt. Glyphosate is an herbicide that reportedly kills weeds in a non-selective manner. It works by disrupting the enzymatic pathways in the plants, inhibiting plant growth and survival.

If Roundup comes in contact with the skin, it can cause skin irritation. It can also irritate the eyes, nose and throat if the chemical comes in contact with those parts of the body. In addition to irritating the nose and throat, breathing in Roundup during application can also cause increased saliva, burns in the mouth and/or throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Intentional ingestion of glyphosate has reportedly resulted in death, although the National Pesticide Information Center notes that there have only been a small number of such incidents.

Is Roundup Safe To Use?

Long-term exposure to glyphosate, an active ingredient in Roundup weed killer, can reportedly increase a person’s risk to certain types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Although the topic of glyphosate-associated cancer is controversial, some governments have imposed restrictions on the use of the chemical, including certain cities and provinces in Canada.

Numerous individuals around the world have alleged that Roundup has caused cancer, specifically due to the active ingredient, glyphosate. The most common type of cancer that is allegedly linked to Roundup with glyphosate is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, although Roundup has been blamed for other types of cancer as well.

Roundup cancer lawsuits have been filed by individuals who have been exposed to glyphosate and subsequently developed cancer. In some cases, the individuals have reportedly died of glyphosate cancer and their loved ones have filed a Roundup lawsuit for wrongful death.

Although Bayer and Monsanto have denied that Roundup causes cancer, jurors in the United States have recently awarded generous awards to plaintiffs in Roundup cancer lawsuits. A response, Bayer has agreed to a Roundup settlement worth billions of dollars to resolve outstanding litigation over glyphosate cancer claims and other allegations.

What Is Glyphosate?

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as  “probably carcinogenic to humans” in March 2015. This classification was reportedly based on “limited” evidence of cancer in humans from real-world exposure to glyphosate and “sufficient” evidence of cancer in animals that were part of studies in which they were exposed to “pure” glyphosate.

The IARC reportedly reviewed about 1,000 studies before concluding that there was a risk of glyphosate cancer in humans. Some of the studies they reviewed included individuals such as farmers who were exposed to glyphosate through their jobs, while others involved experimental studies on cancer, such as those involving animal subjects.

Some countries have banned the use of glyphosate over concerns that it may cause significant health problems. Germany will reportedly ban glyphosate by 2023. Restrictions on glyphosate have been implemented in other countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy and the Netherlands.

Other government agencies have not concluded that Roundup causes cancer. In fact, some government health agencies maintain that glyphosate is safe to use.

In 2017, Health Canada reportedly reevaluated the safety of glyphosate and concluded that glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer.

Although government health agencies in many countries have deemed glyphosate safe to use, a growing number of consumers allege they have developed glyphosate cancer such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Glyphosate-Related Cancers

A number of Roundup cancer lawsuits include allegations that glyphosate can cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. In addition to Roundup non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, consumers have alleged that glyphosate exposure can cause various forms of glyphosate cancer, including other types of lymphoma, brain cancer, leukemia, stomach cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

Studies have also reportedly shown that glyphosate may also increase the risk of fetal injuries and autism.

Is Roundup Banned in Canada?

Although there is no Canada-wide ban for Roundup with glyphosate, a number of cities and provinces have restricted the use of the herbicide. Eight Canadian provinces currently impose restrictions on the use of glyphosate.

Health Canada has taken the position that glyphosate does not pose a threat to human health. However, some groups are concerned that Monsanto may have influenced the results of the studies Health Canada relied on when making its determination.

Concerns about Monsanto’s influence include findings that more than 70 per cent of the assessment of published research performed in the European Union regarding glyphosate had been copied and pasted from a report submitted by a group that represented the pesticide industry, suggesting there was likely bias in the published research.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency reportedly ignored a significant number of peer-reviewed independent studies supporting glyphosate cancer risks in humans. It is possible that Health Canada’s conclusion about glyphosate cancer risks was unduly influenced by agents within the herbicide industry.

Have any Roundup Canada Lawsuits Been Filed?

In November 2019, a $500 million Roundup lawsuit Canada was launched on behalf of more than 60 plaintiffs. This Roundup class action lawsuit was the first to be pursued in Canada.

According to the Roundup cancer class action lawsuit, glyphosate can cause health problems including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The plaintiffs have reportedly been diagnosed with other types of cancer such as brain cancer and lung cancer.

Several individual Roundup lawsuits have also been filed against Monsanto in British Columbia, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Because there have been individuals who developed glyphosate cancer and consequently passed away, some of the plaintiffs have joined the Roundup class action lawsuit on behalf of an estate.

Bayer has denied the allegations that Roundup causes cancer and says it will “vigorously defend” its products.

“While we have great sympathy for the plaintiffs, glyphosate-based herbicides are not the cause of their illnesses,” Bayer Canada said in a statement provided to CBC News.

“Glyphosate has been extensively studied globally by scientists and regulators, and results from this research confirm it is not carcinogenic. We firmly stand behind the safety of glyphosate-based products and as a company devoted to life sciences, assure Canadians that their health and the environment are our top priority.”

It is possible that thousands of Canadians may be affected by health conditions related to exposure to Roundup with glyphosate. By filing a Roundup lawsuit or joining a glyphosate cancer class action lawsuit, individuals who have developed glyphosate cancer may be able to attain significant compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, emotional distress, and more.

Have any Roundup Settlements Been Reached?

Despite its assurances that Roundup is safe, Bayer has seemingly decided that it may not be worth taking all of the pending Roundup cancer lawsuits to court. Last month, Bayer announced that it had reached a Roundup settlement worth $10 billion to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits in the United States, many of which involve allegations that Roundup causes cancer.

According to NPR, “The settlement calls for Bayer to pay from $8.8 billion to $9.6 billion to resolve current Roundup lawsuits. The company will also set aside $1.25 billion to fund payouts for potential claims in the future.”

This Roundup settlement does not apply to three cases that have already gone to trial, including one California Roundup lawsuit in which a jury awarded a couple more than $2 billion in damages after determining the husband developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to long term use of Roundup with glyphosate.

Should You File a Roundup Cancer Lawsuit?

If you or someone you love developed glyphosate cancer after long term exposure to Roundup, you may be eligible to take legal action against Monsanto and its parent company Bayer.

A Roundup lawsuit Canada may result in substantial compensation. Although a lawsuit Roundup cannot take away your physical and emotional suffering, it could provide significant financial compensation to help you and your family, such as compensation for your lost wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other losses you have experienced.

If a loved one has died from suspected glyphosate cancer, you may qualify to pursue wrongful death claims against Bayer and Monsanto.
