Shocked driver over Honda and Ford Recalls

Honda and Ford are reportedly recalling more than one million vehicles in North America over potential safety hazards.

The Honda safety recall includes 53,770 vehicles in Canada for issues with sliding door handles, rear view cameras and software, plus 1.4 million vehicles in the United States for issues with the driveshaft, window switches and software.

Ford is issuing two safety recalls. The first includes certain 2021 Ford E-Series vehicles over potentially mispositioned insulation under the engine cover that may ultimately result in drivers or passengers suffering burns to the skin. The second Ford recall includes certain 2020-21 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles over concerns that motor mount fasteners may become loose and disconnect from the engine.

Owners of the affected vehicles will reportedly be notified if their vehicle is affected by the safety recall.

Honda Recalls Thousands of Vehicles in Canada

The Canadian Honda recall involves certain vehicles that may have one or more issues, depending on the vehicle’s body style. The vehicles listed in the Canada Honda safety recall include:

  • 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey
  • 2019-2020 Honda Passport
  • 2019-2021 Honda Pilot

These recalled vehicles require fixes that may include two software updates, rear view camera replacement and sliding door handle cables. The required repairs depend on whether the vehicle is a van or SUV.

The Honda Odyssey recall will reportedly address a couple of problems, including the potential for water to enter the doors and freeze the handle cables or to enter the rear view camera and distort the projected image.

Safety Recalls Affect Over One Million U.S. Honda Vehicles

The Honda recalls in the U.S. will address potential problems with the software that operates rear camera turn signals and windshield wipers that may cause these systems to malfunction. This recall affects about 737,000 vehicles, and includes 2018-2020 Honda Accord vehicles and 2019-2020 Honda Insight vehicles.

An additional 430,000 vehicles are being recalled in 22 states that use salt on their roads in the winter. The salt reportedly can cause the Honda in snow regarding the safety recalls driveshafts to corrode over time and break. The vehicles affected by this safety recall include:

  • 2012-2020 Honda Civic Hybrid
  • 2007-2014 Honda Fit
  • 2013-2015 Acura ILX
  • 2013-2015 Honda Accord

Honda has also issued a U.S. recall of about 268,000 Honda CR-V vehicles and a U.K. recall of nearly 78,000 vehicles over fire risks. The CR-V model years affected by this Honda safety recall include 2002 through 2006. In these vehicles, water can reportedly enter the driver’s window, causing an electrical short in the power window switch. When this happens, it can potentially cause fire. As of November, Honda said 23 fires and 87 “thermal events” were reported and believed to be related to the issue.

Ford Recall Over Mispositioned Insulation

Certain Ford vehicles reportedly contain mispositioned insulation under the engine cover. Because the insulation does not fully cover the underside of the engine cover, heat from the engine compartment can cause elevated temperatures on the passenger compartment surface. As a result, drivers and passengers who have direct and continuous contact with certain areas of the engine cover may experience burns to their skin.

The vehicles affected by the engine cover thermal management recall include certain 2021 Ford E-Series. Approximately 2,412 vehicles in Canada and 29,344 vehicles in the U.S. are affected by this Ford safety recall. The affected vehicles were reportedly built between May 11, 2019 and Nov. 13, 2020 at the Ohio Assembly Plant.

As part of the recall, Ford dealerships will inspect the engine cover for mispositioned insulation and install insulation patches if necessary.

Ford says it is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to this issue.

Ford Motor Mount Fastener Recalled

Ford has also recalled certain 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles over concerns that the motor mount fasteners may become loose and disconnect from the engine, resulting in loss of power.

The affected vehicles were reportedly built between July 28 and 30 at the Chicago Assembly Plant.

The Ford safety recall affects approximately 1,405 vehicles in the U.S., 65 vehicles in Canada and two in Mexico. Ford says it is unaware of any injuries or accidents or injuries related to this issue. The dealership will replace the right-hand mount fasteners.

Honda Takata Airbag Settlement

This isn’t the first time a Honda recall has made headlines. Over the summer Honda Canada reached a nationwide airbag defect class action settlement in Canada over allegations certain Honda and Acura vehicles contained defective Takata airbag inflators. As part of the settlement, Honda reportedly agreed to expedite the replacement of recalled Takata airbag inflators and reimburse customers for certain out-of-pocket expenses.

The deadline to opt out of the Honda Takata airbag class action settlement passed on Nov. 20.
