ONTARIO ENERGY GROUP SETTLEMENT UPDATE:
- The Court approved the settlement Oct. 21, 2021.
- The claim period is expected to open by the end of 2021 or in early 2022.

Class Members may be able to take part in a proposed $14.95 million settlement that, if approved, will end claims that Ontario Energy Group duped consumers into misleading and illegal contracts for home equipment, such as water heaters, air conditioners, and furnaces.
Those who may benefit from the settlement include Ontario residents who entered into a lease agreement for equipment with Ontario Energy Group, also known as MDG Newmarket, between May 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2016. Under the terms of the proposed settlement, Class Members may receive cancellation of their lease agreement and forgiveness of any money owed.
In addition, they may be able to take part in a new, lower-cost equipment buyout program. The buyout program will come with fixed and transparent prices that decline over time, say court documents.
Class Members may also be able to take part in a debt management program if they have unpaid arrears and they may also benefit from a reduction in the annual increases to their monthly payments under their Ontario Energy Group lease agreement.
The lead plaintiff, now deceased Hugh Cullaton who is represented by his estate, claimed the Ontario Energy Group went door-to-door selling contracts to lease equipment to homeowners. Cullaton alleged that the contracts were unlawful and resulted in undisclosed high monthly rental fees. In addition, the company that purchased the contracts from Ontario Energy Group, Home Trust Company, allegedly slapped liens on the titles to consumers’ homes.
The class action lawsuit accused the company of violating Ontario consumer protection laws.
In the proposed class action settlement, Ontario Energy Group and Home Trust Company have also agreed to clarify the termination terms of their contract and improve their lien and security registration practices.
Class Members who do not wish to take part will need to opt out of the settlement by Sept. 13, 2021.
The Ontario Energy Group class action settlement has not yet been approved by a court. An approval hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23, 2021.

On 2019-03-08 I was subject of a bait and switch by a salesman for OGS who came to do an energy assessment, on heating and hydro, with a complimentary Nexus Thermostat. Everything was a lie, as we found out later. We signed a contract for a Carbon zFikter and a Hepa Filter. CHICC was a co contractor and handled our payments which began on the 2025-03-11. I tried to cancel the contract but couldn’t find anyone in OGS to communicate suits or a mailing address. CHICC finally answered and said they would consider giving us some money for our trouble but I has to deal with OGS. I contacted the Energy Board who told me I head been cheated. I complained to Ontario Consumers Protection. After a lengthy investigation OGS and Director Georges Neheme were subject off multiple charges in Ottawa (6 for me). OGS and Neheme were finally convicted on 27th.,January 2024 in
Ottawa sentenced February 27th., 2024 and received multiple fines and restitution to me and given six months to pay and remove liens etc. OGS apple added the sentence and after a delay by OGS the appeal court hearing is to proceed on2025-04-04.
I have been approached twice to settle with OGS through Solomon Jones Ltd., to pay them some money and they will cancel the lien on our property and an credit bureau action for a total of $46,000 for cancelling payments in 2021.
I am writing a letter to OGS with advice of a lawyer to settle if the withdraw claim and cancel that lien, or proceed civilly.
I’ve been mislead by the consultant and signed the contract for furnace. How can I join with the lawsuit?
My father somehow got roped into a hot water tank and furnace back in 2015 and 2016. He recently passed and I’m trying to get information on the contract. I have asked for a copy of the signed contract on several occasions and no one will provide this to me. They just keep telling me that someone will call me back and they of course never do.
Now I’m trying to sell his house and there is a lien on it for the furnace. They are impeding the sale of this house. I would like in on this if possible.

I signed up on 26/01/2015,The terms of this account for an A/C unit are out of line . they want 69.95 a month ,with an annual increase of 3.8%.they say my contract is 15 yrs. long .This is the first time I have heard of the class action suite.

In August, 2022, we were contacted by a representative from Ontario Green Savings. Our furnace, air conditioner and heat pump were at the tim 10 yrs. old and had been installed initially all at the same time during a renovation . The rep informed us on the phone that we could have our furnace replaced with a new one for a rental charge of $104.99 a month for 120 months. We accepted the offer and on Aug. 12/22, a crew from Toronto arrived, installed and tested the new furnace and left the same day. A few days later I noticed water on the furnace and called number they had left me. To make a long story short, they had a Sudbury company attend my residence and they fixed the problem, (faulty condensate pump), at no charge to me.
Shortly after I received a call from Ontario Green Savings to follow up on the repair.
During that call, I mentioned the air conditioning system had been installed and ran in conjunction with the furnace and heat pump. He then asked me why we hadn’t replaced the air conditioner too, as it should have been included with the furnace at no extra charge! It was all in one package!!! I asked him 3 times if there was no extra charge and that it was all covered by the one $104.99 monthly payment. He assured me it was. The same crew from Toronto that that installed the furnace came back and switched the air conditioner on October 7/22. I mentioned the paper he had me sign indicated a charge of $109.99 a month. He told me that would be adjusted by his head office as he had to tell them of the circumstances that this should have been listed on the paperwork for the furnace. Sadly…..I trusted him.
We have now made two automatic monthly payments of $215.98.
ALL THOUGH THIS WAS ALL VERBAL, IT WAS DEFINITELY A SCAM.
They said 6 years we have it written 6 years but there saying its all 10 years we were supose to get a free ecobee there charging us for it were our doorbells dont work properly they keep cutting out they wanted me to call and fix it instead of them comming they were supose to come and check out stuff 3 times when we first got it they havent yet we also have a hepa filter which the huy said 6 years there saying its 10 they dont keep to what theve said and have lied about it i was wondering if i could be apart of this lawsuit i also have document
They installed an air conditioner on me in 2017, since then I have been fighting with embregde because they came and installed saying it was a government order, I never signed anything in a contract, a signature appears that is not mine, now I try to fix it with utilbill, they do not answer, they do not attend In the office, the government must take action because it is an Asian fraud, people who do not know how the system works work to survive and it is not fair that these companies come to deceive us and nobody can do anything
