A Honda airbag settlement has been reached to resolve claims that the company used defective Takata airbags in its vehicles.
The settlement benefits current and former Canadian owners and lessees of certain Honda and Acura vehicles. Vehicles included in this settlement range from model years 2001 to 2017. A full list of eligible vehicles can be found on the settlement website.
All current owners and lessees are eligible, while former owners and lessees are eligible only if they sold their vehicle after the Takata airbag recall was announced but before the settlement was approved.
Takata airbags have consistently been in the news for years after 67 million airbags were recalled by the company due to defective inflators. These defective parts may cause airbags to fail, explode when deployed, or shoot shrapnel into the cabin.
According to Transport Canada, there have not been any recorded incidents involving the Takata airbags in Canada. However, these products are still being recalled.
Takata faces numerous class action lawsuits over its airbags but it is not the only company facing legal liability. Consumers have taken legal action against companies such as Honda, seeking compensation for injuries and financial damages which allegedly occurred as a result of the dealerships’ decision to equip their vehicles with Takata airbags.
In Canada, Honda has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to resolve these claims with a class action settlement.
The settlement provides numerous benefits, including a Customer Out Of Pocket Expense Program, Outreach Program, Customer Support Program, and Automotive Recycler Program. These programs provide benefits in addition to the benefits provided by the Takata airbag recall.
Monetary benefits are available through the Customer Out Of Pocket Program. This program provides cash reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred during the recall remedy repairs or due to fear of driving the vehicle. This may include rental car fees, child care expenses, lost wages, and other costs.
Other programs in the settlement focus on non-monetary benefits such as widespread notifications, recall remedy support, and recycling systems to help ease the process.
The Ontario Superior Court approved the settlement Dec. 22, 2020. The Quebec Superior Court approved the settlement Jan. 22, 2021. Approval was registered with the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench on Jan. 27, 2021, and with the British Columbia Supreme Court on March 15, 2021.
The final approval date for the Honda airbag settlement was April 14, 2021.
The deadline for objection to the settlement was Oct. 21, 2020. The exclusion deadline was Nov. 20, 2020.
In order to receive payments from the Honda airbag settlement, Class Members must file a valid claim form by April 14, 2022 — one year after the final approval date.

I received a couple small settlements and the letter indicated that a larger one would be coming in the future. Is this true?
