Recall announced for caffeinated energy drinks due to noncompliance

The Canadian government issued a recall for various brands of caffeinated energy drinks over concerns they fail to comply with caffeine content and labelling requirements. 

The recall involves 38 caffeine energy drinks sold under popular brands such as Monster, Red Bull, Prime, Bang, Celsius and Mtn Dew Energy, among others, according to the recall. 

Consumers can tell if a caffeine energy drink does not meet Canadian food safety standards by checking if their caffeine levels exceed 180 milligrams per single serving, the maximum amount allowed, and making sure their labels contain either English or French, according to the government. 

“In Canada, energy drinks must not contain more than 180 milligrams of caffeine in a single serving. These products also require cautionary statements to protect vulnerable populations, including children, and to provide information on the safe number of servings per day,” the recall states. 

Energy drink recall part of ongoing investigation

The government says the recall is part of an ongoing investigation and notes that the majority of the recalled caffeine energy drinks are “neither manufactured nor intended for sale in Canada” but rather “imported by third parties and sold in stores across Canada.” 

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency first published the recall warning in August with a list of affected products, which has since been updated seven times to include more caffeine energy drinks. 

In the United States, Sen. Chuck Schumer called for an investigation into Prime Energy drinks in July over concerns about the product’s caffeine content, which was reported to be 200 milligrams per can, exceeding the acceptable limit in Canada.
