Nurse reaching for medical equipment regarding the ParaMed class action lawsuit

A class action lawsuit accusing ParaMed Inc. of using equipment during wound care that wasn’t properly sterilized has been given the green light.

If you received wound care at a ParaMed clinic in London, Ontario, and were notified that you may have been exposed to blood borne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV, you may be a Class Member of this ParaMed class action lawsuit.

ParaMed Allegedly Failed to Properly Sterilize Wound Care Devices

The ParaMed class action lawsuit was filed following an advisory issued by the Middlesex-London Health Unit on Aug. 20, 2018 regarding a lapse in infection prevention and control practices at certain London ParaMed Clinics between 2008 and July 27, 2018.

Public health inspectors subsequently launched an investigation and found the ParaMed clinics failed to adequately clean critical devices that are used in wound care services. In some instances, the inspectors found that wound care instruments were being reused without sterilization or high-level disinfection between patients.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit warned that anyone who received wound care services at a ParaMed Flex Clinic between 2008 and July 27, 2018 may be at risk of blood borne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

Blood borne infections can pose a serious health risk, so it is important to be tested if you have a potential exposure.

ParaMed Class Action Lawsuit Says Lack of Sterilization Put Patients at Risk

Medical equipment regarding the ParaMed class action lawsuit

The ParaMed class action lawsuit, which was certified on Sept. 22, 2020, alleges the sterilization method for medical devices used at the ParaMed clinics was grossly inadequate and put patients at risk of blood borne infections. The plaintiff seeks damages on behalf of Class Members for severe mental and/or emotional distress, psychological trauma, nervous shock, and invasion of bodily integrity due to blood testing.

According to the ParaMed class action lawsuit, the following ParaMed clinics locations used inadequate sterilization practices:

  • 124 Barker Street
  • 1340 Huron Street
  • 148 Fullarton Street, Suite 200

The court has not yet made any determination about the strength of the claims or the potential outcome of the case. It has simply certified the ParaMed class action lawsuit and paved the way for the case to move forward through the legal system.

  1. Donna says:

I was notified by Paramed I may have been infected with HIV, hepatitis, among other blood borne diseases. I recently had surgery and had home care daily from Paramed . I received a letter I took it to my family physician to get signed before I could get tested for possible contamination. It was so scary to me while I waited for test results, which came back negative. Thank goodness ! Then I received another phone call stating I was not to worry because I was could NOT have been infected because I did not visit the Baker, Fullerton and Huron Street locations. I did visit Sarnia road location.
Testing all for nothing. How incompetent!
    Let’s hold them accountable.

Thank you for your letter about the Paramed class action.
I received wound care at a number of locations, in London due to an ongoing wound on my arm, 2008*2010. I saw numerous doctors and had numerous tests done, as the wound eventually tested positive for MRSA. That was cleared.
The wound was surgically treated at LHSC by Dr. Scilly.
I did; however, subsequently test positive for Hep C when tested in 2014, and may have infected my partner as well.
We have since been cured [Harvoni]2014/2015.
I will be following this class action suit carefully!
