Dodge Ram Truck with EGR Cooler Defect

If you own or lease a 2014 to 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 or 2014 to 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Classic vehicle, equipped with a 3.0 litre EcoDiesel engine, your vehicle may have a dangerous defect.

A new Quebec class action lawsuit launched against FCA Canada Inc. and FCA US LLC alleges certain Dodge Ram vehicles have an exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR) defect that causes the cooler to crack and leak pre-heated vaporized coolant into the EGR system. This dangerous defect can increase the risk of engine compartment fire or sudden loss of power.

Is Your Dodge Ram Dangerous?

According to the Dodge Ram EGR class action lawsuit, the vehicles’ exhaust gas recirculation coolers are vulnerable to thermal fatigue. This defect can cause the EGR coolers to crack internally and leak. These leaks can then cause engine fires or loss of power, both of which present a serious threat for drivers and passengers.

Class Members include all persons in Quebec who own, owned, lease and/or leased a 2014 to 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 or 2014 to 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 Classic vehicle, equipped with a 3.0 litre EcoDiesel engine containing exhaust gas recirculation coolers, designed, manufactured, assembled, tested, marketed, advertised, distributed, leased and/or sold by FCA.

A similar class action lawsuit has already been filed in British Columbia over defective EGR coolers in certain Dodge Ram models.

The Dodge Ram EGR class action lawsuit alleges that as early as 2014, FCA presented to consumers that the EcoDiesel engine is durable and reliable. “The representations that resulted,” accuses the complaint, “were false (because the vehicles contain a defective part) and deceptive (because the vehicles were not durable or reliable and could not perform as represented due to the fire risk).”

Dodge Ram Recalls

In October 2019, the defective Dodge Ram vehicles were recalled from the market. Years after the EGR cooler defect was known, FCA admitted that the cooler was vulnerable to thermal fatigue, therefore potentially placing drivers and passengers at risk.

FCA reportedly recalled some-108,000 diesel-powered Ram 1500 trucks in the U.S.. An additional 50,159 Dodge Ram vehicles were pulled from the Canadian market, and another 1,700 vehicles were recalled across the globe due to the EGR cooler dangerous defect.

According to the class action lawsuit, FCA was aware of the EGR cooler defect since 2014, yet did not investigate the issue until May 2019.

FCA Hit With Multiple Class Action Lawsuits

FCA sign FCA Canada Inc. and FCA US LLC have been hit with several class actions in recent months. A proposed class action lawsuit in B.C. alleges a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) defect in certain Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles.

A variety of vehicles are allegedly affected by the TPMS defect including, among others, the 2009-2010 Chrysler Sebring, the 2008-2011 Dodge Caliber and Caravan, the 2008-2011 Dodge Ram 1500 and the 2008-2011 Jeep Patriot.

Yet another FCA class action lawsuit has bee launched over defective Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid vehicles. According to the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid class action lawsuit, affected vehicles are prone to overheat, which can cause the vehicle to catch fire.

Purchasing a Car? Buyer Beware

In Quebec, all consumer transactions are governed by the provincial Consumer Protection Act (Quebec CPA).

The Quebec CPA establishes several legal warranties to protect consumers. As per the legal warranties, dealers, manufacturers, and intermediaries must provide the warranty of “fitness for purpose” and the warranty of durability.

The warranty for fitness of purpose requires that goods, such as a car, must be fit for the purpose for which goods of that kind are ordinarily used. In the case of a car, its purpose is driving. However, defective vehicles, such as those affected by the EGR cooler problem, may not function properly, and therefore, run the risk of not being “fit” for their purpose.

The second warranty is the warranty of durability, which demands that goods must be durable in normal use for a reasonable length of time. This assessment takes into consideration the goods’ price, the terms of the contract and the conditions of their use.

Im writing from Florida. I had the EGR replaced in June 2023, A few months later I had my turbo cooler line burst. Dealer had to replace the whole intake manifold. It cost me 4568 dollars. I contact Customer Care to seek reimbursement due to this being caused by the EGR recall. When dealer removed intake manifold it was full of soot. I reviewed the entire recall pages on the EGR and it does state that the intake manifold pressure test should be done and if any issue it is to be replaced. I have called Customer Care and that is a complete joke. The first case manager stated it was declined due to the recall being completed in 2020 and he reviewed the case thoroughly. Well not that thoroughly cause the only thing I had completed at the Dealer in 2020 was an oil change. Im not giving up on this… There are more recalls and parts are not available. Please help!!!

I got the 2016 eco ram . An got stuck with the egr had been replaced back in april 2020 .. Ok fine with that but here goes the truth behind that. They installed a egr and thru in one that has 2017 date on it making it a 2017 egr for the 2017 models.. Not that there is a difference there. But if it was done in 2020 why does the part number tell me that it is a 2017 part? An cause I am a second owner thanks to Ontario saving dealers asses. An we don’t have any emission warrenties. It now puts me in spot any one else who has had this happen. Meaning there 2017 egr has failed and you guessed it . I am the one who has to pay out $1400. just for the egr not to mention other damages it has caused. P.s anyone that gets the white smoke coming from the tail pipe beware of it as that is your egr failing if you catch it early enough you can saves your engine .. So here this leads to a massive repair job. One that the FCA should be held responsible for. As Ontario is enforcing making it harder to Delete the problem . Yet the delete is looking like a cure for mine if it isn’t to late now

I also have a eco diesel, got the egr recall done and nothing but problems now.

I bought my 2019 ram ecodiesel new in September 2020. A few months later I noticed the coolant tank was low and contacted the dealer and they conducted a system pressure test. No problem found, oct of 2021 the dealer contacted me stating they need my truck for an EGR recall. I thought coolant in my engine has likely already done some damage to my cylinders so I said yes to the recall to eliminate further issues. Since I got my truck back in October that at that time and prior my fuel economy was 10.2L/100klm is now running 12.5L/100 at best and that is being very mindful of my driving habits. Not impressed at all since the recall and I’ve also noticed it is almost not responsive leaving a stop sign as it once was. My once awesome truck is what I believe going to result me to be the recipient of a major accident one day. I used to love driving it but now it spends most of its life parked in my driveway.

Danial I feel your pain. Today I just brought my 2015 Ram Eco diesel home from being at the dealer for over two weeks. From having a simple engine light come on to being informed I need a new motor. This all came down only five months after the dreaded VB1 recall was performed on my truck. My truck is a 2015 but I only have 75,000km. I too loved my truck, my mileage was 8.8 average, now I’m looking at over 12.5. and the throttle response is damn scary. I’m retired and I thought it was going to the last truck I would need to buy, little did I know.
I am looking at 15 to $20,000 to replace that motor with the same outcome down the road. My only fix as well as yours, and the thousands of Eco diesel motor owners is to do a Delete of the EGR cooler itself. Its not too late for you, I only wish someone would of clued me in when my truck was only a couple years old, I would of gotten rid of that EGR crap and had a still running engine that would be good for over 300,000+ MILES. What’s sickening is that FCA knows of this, that all these motors will shorty meet the same demise and they will give you “O” support.
You now know the fix, you have some food for thought.
      Good luck my friend.

  5. Austin Nevills says:

I own a 2015 and it is one problem after another. I have contacted Chrysler/ FCA and still no results.

  6. Andrew Martin says:

Interestingly enough… my 2015 Ram EcoDiesel is in the shop as we speak to repair the EGR Cooler. About 4 weeks ago, it overheated and my wife was left at the side of the highway. I wasn’t aware of this issue, only that there was a recall ongoing that people were awaiting parts for. I replaced the coolant and then my ETC light came on and the Turbo would not spool up, meaning that I could not accelerate uphill at all, in fact it struggles to keep even speed on any incline greater than a small hill.

  7. LISA HAWKINS says:

    Please add me

  8. Yvon morin says:

I have been trying for over a year to get my egr valve recall done on my 2015 eco diesel. I am being told the dealer is only allowed to order 1 a week so i am on a waiting list. If my truck catches fire you can bet i will get it towed and parked in front on the dealership. What a crock!

  9. Robert Moffatt says:

Are owners who live in Ontario covered under this litigation? I have a 2016 that left me stuck in Florida from Jan to Apr of this year because the EGR failed on my truck. Unsure as to what was done to repair it so I could take it home as I received a couple of different stories. Still not fixed but I am able to drive it.
