A retired TransLink employee has filed a class action lawsuit alleging that the Vancouver-area service failed to protect his and others’ valuable personal data during a December ransomware attack.
The lead plaintiff, identified only by the initials G.D., says that he’s suffered significant damages, as well as inconvenience after his data was exposed in the breach. He’s also concerned about the lack of communication from TransLink to him and others about the data breach.
TransLink operates several transportation services in the Metro Vancouver region, including:
- Coast Mountain Bus Company
- Metro Vancouver Transit Police
- British Columbia Rapid Transit Company
- West Coast Express
On Dec. 3, 2020, Global News reportedly confirmed that previously noted suspicious network activity across TransLink’s computing systems was indeed a ransomware attack initiated with a successful phishing email.
The class action lawsuit says that news reports at the time indicated that private data on TransLink’s network had been downloaded by unauthorized third parties on Nov. 30, 2020. The exposed data reportedly included employee payroll operations, customer payment systems and various other customer service platforms and features.
G.D. points out that this data is highly valuable to hackers and identity thieves and that TransLink had a legal obligation to enact security measures to protect it, but failed to do so.
In addition, G.D. doesn’t believe TransLink has been completely honest about the ransomware attack.
“The Defendant has not provided meaningful clarification regarding the scope and the impact of the TransLink Data Breach on the retirees of TransLink and many of its other stakeholder groups,” states the class action lawsuit. “The Plaintiff is extremely concerned that the Defendant has not been entirely forthright regarding the breadth and implications of the TransLink Data Breach, or the risks to which he and other similarly situated persons are exposed.”
G.D. is looking to represent anyone else whose personal information was exposed in the TransLink data breach. The proposed class action lawsuit is seeking damages, including at least seven years of credit monitoring.

I am not retired from Translink and my data was compromised. Is it too late to join?
Add me to the list also.Translink retiree with the same story SIN number , Bank acct , Name , Etc..all taken. Then a CRA data breach with my personal info stolen.
I was affected also. My personal information stolen and used by identity theives to gain access to my CRA and bank accounts. The year of credit monitoring offered was insufficient.
My name,SIN, bank account details and salary data were compromised.
I have had one hell of a time having to close bank a/c and reopen one and trying to track O/S payments in and out.
Also had to close credit cards for myself, wife and daughter.
The credit watch etc should be minimum 5 yrs preferably 10.
2 years seems to be a usual length of time for hackers to not action the dats stolen knowing the habit of credit watching for 2 years
Had no idea re this class action until today
Received my letter and also recently received notice from CRA that my account was locked as an unauthorized third party may have accessed or tried to. Cannot help but wonder if they are connected.
I received a letter from Translink recently notifying me that my personal information, banking, etc had been leaked in this cyber attack, and was offered 2 years security credit monitoring? And then what!? How do I sign up for this class action?
I received a letter yesterday from Translink telling me that my SIN number and home address were a part of the breach. They offered me 2 free years of credit monitoring as well, which I did sign up for. I only worked at Translink for a very short period of time in 2017.
I also received the same letter yesterday with my Sin, birthday, home address and personal banking information leaked.
