Enoki mushroom listeria recall overview:
- Who: The Canadian food safety watchdog is recalling bags of enoki mushrooms
- Why: The affected products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes
- Where: Canada
Canadian food safety inspectors are recalling bags of enoki mushrooms, as the mushrooms may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
In a notice posted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency July 12, the agency announced 200 gram clear bags labeled ‘Enoki Mushroom,’ with no brand, were being recalled.
The bags have a UPC code of 8 807076 001496, and were distributed by Covic International Trading Inc.
“Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products,” the notice states. “Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.”
The recalled product was sold in British Columbia and Manitoba, and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories, the notice states.
No illnesses reported so far
This recall was triggered by Canadian Food Inspection Agency test results, which found a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product so far, the notice says.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
In May last year, Canadian grocery stores pulled Golden Mushroom brand enoki mushrooms from shelves due to fears of listeria contamination.
Later in 2021, Carleton Mushroom issued a recall after discovering some of its sliced mushroom products may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
