Canadian consumers who used Depo-Provera and were later diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia before May 31, 2010, may be eligible for compensation in the form of a payment thanks to a recent $1.9 million class action settlement.
Eligible settlement Class Members include Canada residents who took at least four consecutive Depo-Provera injections every three months as contraception on or before June 30, 2006, and were then later diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis before May 31, 2010, and within 30 months of their last Depo-Provera shot.
The plaintiffs allege Pfizer did not uphold its legal and statutory obligations because it misrepresented the risks associated with taking Depo-Provera. This misrepresentation came in the form of failing to disclose that Depo-Provera users may experience significant and irreversible bone mineral density loss and later develop osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Depo-Provera is a widely used injectable birth control medication administered by health-care providers, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The company denies wrongdoing in this case. While Pfizer does recognize using Depo-Provera can lead to significant bone mineral density loss, the company issued a safety alert once the problem was identified. Depo-Provera is still marketed in Canada but now has packaging that clearly discloses the risks.
Both the plaintiffs and defendants have determined the proposed settlement agreement is in their best interests.
Eligible Class Members who file a claim in the Depo-Provera class action settlement will receive compensation in the form of a payment.
There are two categories of Class Members: those who will get compensation for bone mineral density loss and those who will get compensated for fractures.
The exact amount of compensation each Class Member will receive hinges on the number of eligible claims received and the circumstances of that Class Member’s diagnosis.
Class Members who were diagnosed with osteopenia will likely receive around $600.
Class Members who were diagnosed with osteoporosis can receive up to $100 per month for the first 12 months, then $50 per additional month up to 120 months.
The maximum compensation amount for any Class Member diagnosed with osteoporosis only is capped at $6,600.
Class Members who suffered fractures will receive compensation that varies depending on where the fracture occurred. They can expect amounts ranging anywhere from $2,500 to $50,000.
In general, the Class Member will receive more compensation as the severity of the injury increases.
Class Members who do not submit a claim will not get compensation.
The deadline for submitting comments has passed.
The deadline to file a claim in this class action settlement is March 1, 2022.

3 thoughts onDepo-Provera Bone Loss $1.9M Class Action Settlement
I didn’t know there was a law suit for Depo Provera shots. I was on it for years and had to be taken off of it due to I was losing too much weight and I developed osteopenia. I have deterioration of my bones and joints and I have severe migraines along with vision
Problems, I have cataracts in both eyes. I tried filing a suit, but was told I the suit is over. This company still needs to be responsible for this, and NO I was NOT notified of this settlement.
I’m so saddened I didn’t know about this lawsuit.
Sincerely,
Verlie
