Blue Cross Insurance has been providing insurance coverage in Canada since 1939. Millions of Candians have supplemental insurance coverage through Blue Cross, which offers a variety of coverage, including health, dental, travel insurance, life insurance, and disability income plans.
This article provides some background information about Blue Cross Insurance Canada, what types of disability plans it offers, and what to do if your Blue Cross disability insurance claim is denied.
How Do I Get Blue Cross Insurance
In Canada, Blue Cross insurance plans are offered on an individual basis and group basis. Some employers offer Blue Cross disability insurance group plans as a benefit. If you don’t have disability benefits that are offered through your employer, you can purchase individual insurance plans to meet your coverage needs. Blue Cross insurance Canada also offers supplemental disability insurance coverage that you can purchase if you would like more coverage than your employer-sponsored plan offers.
If your employer offers Blue Cross disability insurance, you must fill out the appropriate paperwork to ensure you are added to the group plan. If you are looking for individual or supplemental Blue Cross insurance coverage, visit the Blue Cross Insurance Canada website to find out what plans are available and how to apply for Blue Cross insurance.
What is the Cost of Coverage?
The amount you will pay for Blue Cross insurance coverage depends on several factors: whether the plan is a group or individual plan, the amount of coverage available in the plan, your age, current health condition, and type of occupation.
Blue Cross Disability Insurance
One type of Blue Cross insurance coverage is disability insurance. Blue Cross disability insurance provides income replacement plans that will provide income to offset the financial losses a policyholder experiences due to an accident or sudden illness.
According to the Blue Cross Insurance Canada website, the insurer offers five types of disability plans.
The Tangible plan offers disability insurance coverage that automatically transitions to long term care coverage once the policyholder retires from work. This Blue Cross insurance coverage can provide up to $10,000 of coverage per month, based on the policyholder’s age, current health condition and type of occupation.
The Comprehensive Blue Vision plan is best suited for individuals who are self-employed, employed by a business that does not offer group insurance, or business owners, according to the Blue Cross Insurance Canada website. This type of coverage offers up to $10,000 of disability coverage, based on the policyholder’s age, current health condition and type of occupation.
The Monthly Indemnity plan is ideal for individuals whose occupation categories are not eligible for traditional disability coverage, including students, seasonal workers, stay-at-home spouses, part-time employees or people who work in hazardous occupations. This type of disability insurance plan offers policyholders up to $2,000 per month in benefits, based on the policyholder’s age and current health condition.
The Mortgage plan is designed to protect a policyholder’s mortgage or home equity line of credit. Canadians can select coverage that will protect their investment for up to $6,000 per month for either 24 months or the duration of their loan.
The Express plan provides disability insurance without requiring a medical exam. To apply, a policyholder has to provide a simple declaration about a few health questions. This plan provides up to $1,000 per month for 12 months to help manage everyday expenses in the event of an accident or illness.
What Do I Do If I’m Denied?
If your Blue Cross insurance coverage is denied, read your denial letter to find out the reasons behind the denial. If you believe your disability claim should be covered, you can appeal the insurer’s decision.
It is important to note that sometimes insurance companies use vague or confusing language in their disability insurance policies to mislead policyholders into believing their particular situation is not covered when it actually should be.
You may wish to consult with a long-term disability lawyer who is experienced with disability claim denials to find out more about your options and how to maximize your chances of getting your disability claim approved.
